I need advice on the purchase of new strobes

2 posts
  1. I have a Nikon D70 in an Aquatica housing. I have a single YS-90DX strobe. I feel that I should expand to two strobes....and I am not entirely happy with the one that I have...it seems like old technology, and so I don't want to throw good money after bad by buying another one..one advisor has recommended getting a set of Ikelite DS-125 Sunstrobes..I have read about them and they seem pretty tasty...I shoot in the kelp forest off Southern California, and need something that will be strong enough to deal with the low light, low vis, etc... ...and..I shoot on vacation in the tropics in nice clear water( Cozumel, etc), and need someting sensetive enough to not overpower the shot...I enjoy both wide angle shots ( wrecks, kelp forest), but also need something that will work for my growing interest in macro...My budget isn't endless, but I have also learned that this isn't a cheap hobby, and so am prepared to spend what is necessary, to get good quality equipment..I would like to stay close to 2000 bucks for the 2 strobes( and any chargers, power supplies etc.) ,necessary cords, and a second arm (ultralite)....I will admit a very limited knowledge here, but I always get good advice from the gallery here at wetpixel...and would graciously request your input and recommendations before I start spending money. Thanks -J.K.

  2. We went from Ike MS50 & 200's to Inon Z240 and have been quite satisfied wiith them. If you watch your strobe placement, they will light up a Nikon10.5 adequately, but not an entire whale shark! You can do 2 strobes, cables, batteries and a Sea & Sea TTL controller for $2,200
