I have a UK-Germany 300D housing with 2 ports and it's working fine. The Canon 300D however, is showing its age (4 years). The mirror stop mechanism recently failed and it was expensive to fix (240EUR). The next to go is probably the shutter, which routinely fails after about 50.000 clicks from what I've read on other forums.
So my question is:
What other Canon DSLRs will be sufficiently similar to fit in a UK-Germany 300D housing ?
I would be prepared to ask Uwe for small modifications, but in the end I want to preserve my investment and just upgrade the camera. My model of choice would be the 40D, but the 20 and 30D's are cheap 2nd hand these days. Will these fit? Or am I stuck with having to get another used 300D in case mine fails completely ?
Thanks for your help
Hmm...good question. I would take your housing to the camera shop and look at the 350D and 400D. They are similar in size to the 300D but that's about it.
Cheers
James
I doubt that you'll be able fit any other camera in a UK-Germany 300D housing. All the newer Rebels are smaller, and everything else is bigger. If are still satisfied with the features of the 300D the easy answer is to buy another used one. It probably cost less to buy a functioning one on ebay than to have the old one repaired.
If you want to upgrade, you'll need a new housing.
Fred,
There are 300D (original Digital Rebel) everywhere for $325.00 and even less. This would be the cheapest solution.
Someone who can modify a mouting plate might make either the Rebel XT or XTi fit. However, those bodies are significantly smaller and buttons lining up might be a problem unless you can live with minimal controls.
A 20D or 30D is slightly larger and thus might not fit
Good luck,

If the camera is smaller then the chances are that someone can make a conversion kit - but not all of the functions may work. If you can get the main and subcommand dials to work, that would be a good step.
Bill Reed in Vancouver made a conversion kit so that I can use a 5D in a 10D housing (subal)
