Buying a strobe from the USA?

  1. Hi all I wonder if you could help me please?

I am looking to buy an Inon Z240 from the states as the exchange rate is so good at the moment, can anyone point me in the right direction of someone I can buy online WITHOUT using Paypal, an international money transfer or AmEx? ie by standard Visa or matercard?

I've found some fantastic deals with some very helpful people but no way to pay without one of the three I've mentioned already.

Help please - I'd love to order today!

  2. If you need some help we can work something out, email me.

  3. Reef Photo

They are a site sponsor and will take good care of you.

Or, Dolphin Scuba in Sacramento. They have been excellent to deal with.

Reef were my first port of call and although yes they are incredibly helpful they cannot accept UK Visa or Mastercard payments unfortunately.

I will try Dolphin Scuba, thanks

Loftus - have PM'd you as I cannot find your email address :)

  5. Hi Tazzie,

I have bought stuff from Reef Photo with a British visa card. Admittedly I was in their shop, rather than doing it over the phone - which may have changed the security reasons. Plus they knew where they could find me locally if my card didn't go through!

  6. personally i prefer do my shopping from backscatter, Jim is very helpful and he is willing to give solution to any problem. I think that is worth it to make a call !

  7. I second that.

I have purchased strobes (and a housing) from B&H using Visa without any issues.

Have you considered buying from Japan? I'm sure Tim (from DG) bought his from here and it was a lot cheaper than even from the States.

  9. Thanks all for your advice and PMs, most appreciated.

Unfortuantely backscatter have the same issues with first time purchasers and ask for a money transfer.

I decided to do some more digging over in the UK whilst I was in Ocean Optics last night and I have to say I am very impressed! I was originally given the wrong price for the unit (£100 more than it actually is) and Steve spent quite some time going through the features with me. At £499 and the insistance that they wont sell it to me without connecting it to my housing and camera themselves to check there are no idiosyncracies, I think the now much smaller price difference (when you take into account cost of a money transfer and shipping and possible VAT on top) isn't the governing factor when I can get excellent support from the OCean Optics guys.

Thank you once again though for all your help, ideas and PMs, most appreciated :)

  10. Slightly off topic but for those in the USA I was looking at the tariffs for importing photographic equipment into the USA:

    http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/bychapter/index.htm

You can find it in Chapter 90. I was amazed that strobes can be imported into the USA without duty.

And just in case you want to bring a nuclear reactor back in to the country after visiting say North Korea or Iran, that is in Chapter 84 :)
