First attempts with a Magic Filter

  1. Hi All.

Well, here are a couple of my first attempts with the Magic Filter. It is only the third dive with the D70 underwater, so I am fairly happy with the results.

I know, they are far from perfect, but I would like to know what you all think.

These are all whole images, not cropped or fiddled with, just converted to jpegs, and posted on FLICKR.

The images are clickable, so you can see a larger version, if you really feel the need !!

All taken with Nikon D70 in Ikelite housing, no strobe, Magic filter. Taken in Marsa Alam, Egypt.

Looking forward (?) to your comments.

  2. Great Photos! Very nice, natural colors. Any idea what depth / F-stop / Shutter speed you used? Did you have to do anything in "post"?

    thanks,

    John

Hi John, thanks for the comment.

All these shots were taken using the Nikon 12-24mm lens. I metered using center weighted Aperture Priority.

I manually white balanced each time I changed depth by more than a meter. I did find that white balancing at any depth greater than 25 mtrs was quite difficult, I am not sure why, but I could not get the camera to WB.

The Moray was around 10 Mtrs depth, exposure was 1/80th @f4. I did a few, and was trying to get a nice blue background.

The turtles were at around 8 mtrs, and exposure was 1/50th @ f8. They were taken at a place called Abu Dubab, and we went there to see the Dugong which is sometimes there. He wasn't there that dive, but there were plenty of turtles!!

The Reef shot with the school of fish was around 18 mtrs, shot at 1/15th@f8.

All I did in post was to convert to jpeg.

  4. Being able to white balance from 0 - 25 meters is quite an accomplishment. Nothing wrong with that!
