Strobe(s) for Galapagos?

2 posts
  1. Hello all.

I've been shooting a Canon RebelXT in an Ike housing for about a year now and am very comfortable with it. I'm headed to Galapagos in about 5 weeks and suddenly started wondering if I should add a strobe to my set-up. My shooting style tends toward wide-angle views of larger stuff like sharks, turtles, rays, etc.; not macro. I use the Canon 17-40 and Tokina 10-17 underwater with the 8" dome.

I'm wondering whether I would benefit greatly from a strobe. I'm suddenly thinking that I might regret it if don't bring something like an Ike DS125 or the newer DS200. With my style of shooting, could I get by with one bigger strobe rather than two smaller strobes? Would I need two anyway? Would the weight imbalance of one strobe be problematic? Two is obviously more $$.

And with a strobe(s), how does one position them to eliminate backscatter from the water?

Sorry for all questions. Only 5 weeks left, big decisions to make, and maybe lots to learn.

Thanks in advance for any help, advise, or suggestions!

p.s. All these shots were taken without a strobe.

  2. Hi there, great shots , you have learnt to use the ambient light very well.

but to be honest if you are taking a trip to Galapagos you need strobes, 2 of them, the model and make is up to you but ikelite and inon are 2 of the favoured. personally i prefer inon as i have had alot of people with problem with ikelites own batteries and inon uses ni/mh so they are cheap, easily replaceable and at a push you can buy disposables in a shop, if your ikelite battery goes down you are pooped. so maybe the inon z-240s. wide placement of the strobes out to the side of your camera on arms will hopefully get rid of most of your backscatter issues.

have fun on your trip , i am jealous,

    Jez
