Which Sigma lense?

  1. Will be buying one of these and using topside too. I do not have Photoshop or Nikon's Capture NX, but would need to defish the 15mm for most topside pics (buildings, some landscapes). I narrowed it down to these two due to reviews and price. Thanks!

  2. The 10-20 is a lot more versatile. I would get either the Sigma 10-20 or, if you want a fisheye, the Tokina 10-17 (this lens will give you the Nikkor 10.5-range and a Sigma 15 and a Nikkor 16 plus some more in one lens!).

  3. Depends on the conditions. I have the 10-20 and it is slow. I dive in BC, and even with the sun shining last weekend through the kelp, ISO set at 200, I still had difficulty getting enough light with it wide open. It is excellent for land shots. I am considering the 15mm for exclusive U/W use.

    Cheers,

  4. If you plan to use these with filters the f2.8 focusing of the 15mm will be to your benifit. I have the Nikon 12-24mm which has AF-s and its still slow to focus, mainly I think due to the F4. I expect the 10-20mm or even the 10-17mm would be the same. The 15mm is also future proof as it works on full frame as well.

The 15mm isn't as fishy as you would expect on a cropped sensor.

Its also simpler to use underwater without the zoom.

If you are planning to de-fish the 15mm lens you need DXO software http://www.dxo.com or the fisheye hemi plugin for Photoshop http://www.imagetrendsinc.com/products/spe...i.asp#hemi_tips.

Capture won't do it for the Sigma. It does great with the 10.5 though. You can also de-fish the 10-17mm but its more complex.

  5. I've used the 10-20 on a few occations in the Baltic Sea (no filters). Didn't have any problems with the AF. I did have to crank the ISO up a little compared to in tropical waters and I had to be extra observant on the shooting angle, but was able to keep apartures at f6.3 or smaller, for corner sharpness. So it works. But it would of course have been nicer if it was a 2.8-glass.

Shooting under water is always a trade off :D You just have to set your priorities straight.

    good luck

  6. bottom line:

15mm FE is best for UW

    10-20mm is best for topside

    you decide.
