Making big prints

3 posts
  1. I'm planning to make a exhibition on a open area , so i plan to make prints up to 60 inches long . But i have no previous experience and limited knowledge about resizing and preparing the images to obtain the best print results.

Originals files are from drum scanned slides ( Fuji Velvia and Provia ) and digital raw files from Nikon D200.

I will appreciate any help and suggestion about :

How to resize and prepare the image prior to print

Which kind of paper is actually the best .

How to protect the prints for the outdoors ( sun , rain , etc ) .

Any help/ tip will be greatly appreciated.

  2. Although my printing is limited to smaller stuff, I can give you a warning about display. Before you get too far along with your project I strongly recommend you determine how you will display them. When you go over 40 inches lots of problems start to crop up that can all be fixed, but will require more money. That majority of framing materials are manufactured in volume at 32x40 inches. You can get larger, but your selection is lower and cost is higher. If you try to mail order materials, the shipping cost can be very high. Most inexpensive do it yourself mounting methods tend to break down for large images. In some cases you run into problems immediately, in other cases, a couple years later the image is bubbling or peeling. Glass gets heavy and acrylic gets expensive so you can consider laminating but that isn’t free either. I am not saying it cant be done, just try to do some research early so you have time to work out your quality vs budget decisions.

Yes definitely i need to research very carefully , although this project will be covered totally with sponsored funds , mistakes are critical because of the size of the project.

I hope some people here had some experience printing that big and are able to share it.

    Thanks again for your advise
