Tokina 10-17mm and DXO anyone?

  1. I just saw that the DXO folks are now supporting the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye we love so much! Had my fingers crossed for long, hoping they would support it.

So, has any of you tried it on the tokina? On landshots and/or watershots?

    Here's what I'm curious about:

    - CA: this issue seems a bit too complex to be effectively removed in PS's raw converter. I see that CA's are unevenly spread from corner to corner, with less CA in the middle and more at the image borders. If you try the PS correction, you can correct for the borders, but then the middle looks crappy and viceversa...it's always a big compromise.

    - Defishing: i don't expect solid results from defishing images shot at 10mm, but - on the other hand - images shot at 12 to 17mm are much less distorted, and could render good results

    - The upcoming DXO v.5 will introduce a complete raw plugin, together with advanced noise removal (they say it works on the raw files), and I'm definately

  2. The dome also contributes to optical flaws. What can DXO do about that?

  3. Not much probably.

On a related note, I wrote the the authors of some of the Panotools plugins to see if I could send them some test shots of a square grid underwater for them to do a lens correction but they said "no" it would be too much work.

    Cheers

  4. Haha not surprising.

The nice thing about underwater is how fisheye distortion is so well hidden. I'd value far more a reliable CA correction for macro shooting. Unfortunately, with Lightroom I'll need whatever can be integrated into that tool. I wish the ACR authors would give us more CA correction range. What they have may be enough for lenses but it is NOT enough when flat ports add to the problem.

I believe port distortions are greater than lens distortions alone. That's why DXO doesn't interest me for underwater.

Although I have the impression that the 10-17 shows far less distortion underwater. On land it's a bitch. Do acrylic domeports reduce CAs underwater? :D

  6. It's conceivable but highly unlikely.
