NEXUS 5D

  1. Dear all

I would like to ask your opinion about the NEXUS 5D housing. I am currently browsing around for a 5D housing. Now I would have a possibility to get a good deal for the NEXUS 5D housing.

I have the following 5D setup:

    -Canon EF 15mm fisheye

-Canon 16-35mm L 2.8 USM (1 not the new one)

    -Canon 100mm 2.8 USM

My real favorite housing would be a Hugyfot but the deal on the NEXUS would safe me a lot of money.

Currently I consider the following draw backs on the NEXUS:

1.) Relativity bad access of shutter release and * button (AE/AF lock) at the same time wile holding the grip

2.) Relativity bad access of the 2nd program wheel at the Back of the housing wile holding the grip

3.) The Canon 16-35mm L 2.8 USM does not relay fit into the 160mm fisheye dome

Therefore I would relay like to hear from some users about there experiences with the NEXUS 5D. I might be mistaken and this items are not a issue at all.

    Thanks,

    Matthias

  2. Dear all,

Yesterday I went to the local Nexus dealer and played around a bit with the 5D Housing. Actually I am quite impressed with the Gear. Therefore I like to correct my first statements in order to be fair.

I am quite impressed with the mechanical quality of the housing. The levers, gears and buttons make a good impression to me. OK I never had a housing of another manufacturer in my hands to compare. But being a mechanical engineer myself I got the impression that this assembly is made to last for several years. The housing enables the use of all Function apart if the lens depth-of-field preview button, and the direct print button. These two points I guess are also not really needed in a UW Housing. Unlike dome pictures of some early releases the housing does offer access to the Main Program Mode Dial.

    To my first post:

1.) Relatively bad access of shutter release and * button (AE/AF lock) at the same time while holding the grip

Unlike hat I was reading in some post’s the * button (AE/AF lock) is actually operated by the small lever at the back of the housings right side. Even with my not really big hands I can operate the shutter release leaver and * lever at the same time. The Button at the back side of the housing close to the * lever is for the AF point selection. This button I do not consider to be used for my work frequently.

2.) Relativity bad access of the 2nd program wheel at the Back of the housing while holding the grip

With stretching the fingers to the max it is possible to turn the 2nd program wheel but to operate the set button I had to take my hands off the grip. In this point the hugyfot for example has a clear advantage.

3.) The Canon 16-35mm L 2.8 USM does not relay fit into the 160mm fisheye dome

Their might even be a way to use the fisheye dome with additional dome port extensions. What I donut know is the optical quality of this assembled setup. A correct sized zoom gear would be available.

Now I will see and have to decide. I would like to apologize for inaccurate statements in my first post. Nevertheless I feel their might be room for improvements in terms of the information's available from NEXUS in the Internet about the Canon 5D housing. Unfortunately there is no English translation for the Japanese homepage and at the homepage of NEXUS USA I can to find the details Nexus Japan talks about.

Still I would like to hear from other NEXUS users.

    Best regards,

    Matthias

  3. Hi Matthias,

Thanks for your follow-up. Nexus has only recently started supporting Canon cameras and I'd like to see them continue. I think feedback from users like us is very valuable for them. As you know some functions of the Canon cameras are different than Nikon and may be used differently. I hope that Nexus continues to support Canon and they come out w/ a tailored MkIII housing - one with good support of the * button and one where you can reach the controls without taking your hands off the grips.

    Cheers

    James
