TTL Strobe for Olympus

  1. Some advice!

I recently purchased a sea&sea strobe YS90DX to use with my Olympus 5050. I would like to now use TTL with this strobe by buying a new housing such as the Ikelite model, however I heard that the YS90DX cannot work in TTL mode with a digital camera, is this true ? do I need to stick with the synch cable and manual mode ?

If so can someone recommend a good strobe that can work with similiar features to the YS90?

    Thanks in advance,

    Kye

  2. Hi Kye,

At this time, there is only one flash that is designed to deliver TTL exposure with the Olympus and it is not made for underwater use (it's the dedicated Olympus flash). So yes, it's true that your YS90DX will not be able to deliver TTL control with your 5050.

You can get manual control of your YS90DX or other flashes using the Ikelite housing with a sync cord connecting the strobe to your camera's hotshoe.

Oceanbrite seems to have a system where they install a bulkhead (they call it a plug) in your housing to control an Epoque strobe, as shown here:

  3. James - you fail to mention the Tetra 5050 which will offer TTL with this strobe. It is controlled by the housing rather than the camera, however.

  4. Ikelite DS-125 with digital sensor will work in TTL........will work with ikelite or olympus housing............note that TTL is not foolproof with this setup and has it's limitations............

  5. Good pt Kasey, I forgot the Tetra.

  6. If you would like to try out the DS50 strobe with TTL controller, let me know. Last week when I saw you, I didn't realize that it was you asking this question.

After re-reading the post and remembering your goodies box, I figured out who you are.

Hope you are getting some good diving in,

  7. Kye, check out the remote slave sensor from the german bloke: http://www.muenster.de/~matthias/blitz/indexe.htm. Folks at digitaldiver have been testing it here: http://www.digitaldiver.info/yabbse/index....id=828;start=45. Of particular interest to you is Jeff's post (no. 14 on this page)

I would think that would be cheaper than changing your strobe or buying the LMI Tetra housing.

However if you're interested in changing your strobe then I highly recommend the Ikelite DS125 with the TTL slave sensor. Bear in mind that if you want to shoot manual with the strobe at the same time it only has 4 settings (1, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8), each setting being 1 f-stop, as opposed to the finer settings on the YS90.

  8. Comparing a YS90 to a DS125 is like comparing a Saab to a Ferrari. YS90 intensity and angle of coverage is identical to a DS50. Manual Controller with a DS50 provides ten power settings in half/power increments with the knob near the camera rather than up on the strobe, and price is very similar to the YS90. Comparison is on following URL:

  9. Some advice please, I have read several detailed posts on how to use an Olys (mine is a C-3040) with Ikelite strobes. I'v had three SubStrobes, BUT has there been any details for using Oly with Sea & Sea YS-90DX? I know about: manual mode, spd 100, f-stop about 8, forced flash, slow 1, manual white balance, spot focues ON?. Is there anything different with the S&S using its fiber optic and do I just dial in settings until I get the right one?

P.S. do any of you use a bright lite (UK HID or the like) as a focusing aide?
