Will a S&S YS 90X work with a S&S DX-D70?
It should will be non-TTL (you mean the YS-90DX, the older strobe?)
There are ways (with some extra parts) to make it TTL if you like

Yes, that is what I meant (I corrected the post). Some of the literature on the strobe says it connects to . . . (and listed several DX housing). The DX-D7O wasn't listed.
Do you have any suggestion for strobes? Do you need a strobe if you are only snorkeling and aren't very deep (5 to 10 feet of water).
Thanks

I am pretty sure the YS-90DX was released ( and discontinued ) prior to the release of the DX-D70 which is why it may not be in the literature, but it uses the same connectors.
On the strobe side of things, not sure what your budget is (guess the point and shoot is really out the door now
)I have DS-50 and DS-125 by Ikelite and YS-90DX by Sea & Sea.
Each have their pluses and minuses.
In general the factors I consider are (in no particular order) when I am about to buy a strobe (or decide which ones I may carry depending on the trip)
1.) Size and weight of strobes for travel. I often carry alot of toys with me, so it can be an issue.
2.) Battery type - some have the special batteries/chargers and others can run on "AA". Usually the dedicated batteries will cycle faster and last longer, but by the same token "AA" can probably cover many shots (more so with rechargeables) and can be purchased anywhere and "AA" chargers can be smaller than dedicated wall warts.
3.) Manual adjustments on the strobe/how many levels to tweak
4.) Output of the strobe (area, color temp, etc.)
5.) Cycle times (to some degree). Most strobes will cycle quick enough if you are checking the shot after you took it.
6.) Built in modeling light
People will differ, but I did pick up some extra YS-90DXs myself recently since they are discontinued and I like them. The DS-51 (Ikleite) also looks like a nice litle strobe with manual adjustments (DS-50 did not have that) though people have reported some issues here
As to snorkeling, you can do fine without a strobe in 5-10 feet of water also you can check out filters such as Magic Filters
You may also want to take a quick peak here at the ttl connections thread TTL Connector with regard to the connector mentioned above. None of this is ever easy
