  1. hehehe,

How's this for an $8k laptop for field work.

    MacBookPro 17'

    4Gb Ram

    160Gb 7200rpm HDD

    FCP2

    Shake4

    Photoshop CS3

    Motion

Then all the other regular iLife bits n bobs....

Testing everything. Yes, I got QTPro too!! The plan is to go into the field, shoot like buggery, tapeless workflow for the first time for this old wobbly. Should be a steep learning curve. If I decide to go the Sony XD1 I have just found the slots for their location.

Will let you know how it stands up to the daily knocks.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  3. Mark,

What ever happened to your Red cam? Now you're going to the new Sony, hmmmmm. It would be nice for you to beta test it for the rest of us.

You might want to think twice as to installing the entire Studio 2 in your boot drive. Why take up all that room? Don't forget that your 3rd party plug ins also will occupy some disc space as well. Will you really need and want Live Type or Soundtrack Pro, Color doesn't take up as much room but I haven't met anyone who really knows how to use it yet. However, if you are experienced with Shake than it shouldn't be much of an issue.

  4. Well there's the first perk of your new job.

For a tuff notbook the Panasonic Toughbook are the best. My friend the Farmer has one for his tractor, harvester & 120 foot boom spray...Ive seen it covered in dust and mud...funny to see.

But it's PC so you would need EDIUS and Mercalli. -_-

  5. Steve, `i'm still getting RED!! Don't worry, everything for me is RED. I have half the home ready.

    Cheers, love ya,

    Mark.

  6. Size matters.

  7. Can you put a 2nd hard drive in that laptop Mark?

My next laptop I really want 2 x internal hard drives, one for OS/programs and the other for assets. OK, so eSATA, USB2 etc. might be more friendly than flaky old firewire for external drives but ultimately you can't beat capturing to an internal drive, especially when you're in locations with a dodgy power supply.

  8. You can put 2 drives in a MBP if you want to pull Eric's trick. For fast external storage that is bus powered, check this out.

  9. Nick, I just use the Laptop as a boot, and capture drive. I plug externals into the thing for all archiving etc. Not looking to void my warranty so am not gona be digging into the guts of it yet. Might do that at a later date.

Steve, don't worry mate. I'll be shooting RED in January!

  10. Shooting RED...I'd see a doctor mate....Quick.

  11. hahahaha. Only your mind Dean, only your mind......

    You get that email?

    Mark.

  12. Hey Mark.

You'll love the laptop, easy as pie to capture and all. As you know, I do it all the time with my Powerbook G4 1.67Ghz, never had problems. With you MCPro I assume it'd be even faster. Handy particularly when working with HDV content, where rendering as you know takes a lot longer than good ol' miniDV.

You can keep all the programs on the main HD, and then all those GB of Lyvetype, Sountrack, etc. on a separate disk (external), that way they won't clog up your internal.

You also can easily capture to an external HDD via Firewire, never fails, I do it all the time as you know (remember FnF?)

Heck, you can even capture to a video-iPod in case of an emergency, for that matter, via USB! Never drops a frame!

I'd suggest a Lacie with Fw 800, FW 400, USB2 and eSATA, you'll be set for all kinds of "plan B".

Maxtor is also pretty good, although reliability depends on the model (e.g., the 500Gb with Fw 800, FW 400, USB2 is pretty good, as are the older "Onetouch II" Maxtors; the 1Tb and 1.5Tb instead have had all kinds of problems, likely to the RAID configuration - which you can disable anyway).

Whatever you get, make sure your external HD has got a good "bridge" (i.e., the chip on the small board on the external enclosure that makes it "talk" to your Mac); Oxford brides are very reliable, and used typically in most major brands.

Any Mac laptop questions, you know where to catch me!

Oh, I've sent you a separate email. Enjoy Antibes!

    Nick

  13. Don't forget that the new Leopard OS starts shipping next week. I'll be getting it but will wait a bit to install, let others find the bugs before I do.

I have it in my shopping cart right now and will start it off on some of my non-critical machines. Should be interesting ;-)

  15. Darn, it is hard keeping up with you guys. I just ordered my MBP this morning, never had a laptop, I told my friend to wait until after the 26th to order it so that it will ship with Leopard. Once I get it, I will be asking everyone here about proper maintenance and all the bugs I will need to get used to. I also ordered the Lacie 250gig all terrain external for the media files in the field.

Does anybody want to buy my wife? Cheeeeap!
