Kees Opstal wins again

12 posts
  1. Maybe he's too polite to bring it to attention himself, but here goes.

After winning last year, Wetpixeler Kees (DuikKees) wins the overall titel of the Dutch championship for underwater photography again, winning the categories of macro and wide angle. The categories fish potrait and wide angle with model are left to others.

The championship is over 2 days shooting, after which a week is allowed for final selection. There is not much editing allowed, only contrast, sharpening and white balance.

Some pictures are posted in a dutch forum:

  3. Congratulations again, Champ!

Hope the Queen CD is not wearing out.

  4. Hi, Thanks

I am a realy proud guy again

About the Queen CD, you will probably not believe that this mask is her (=girlfriend) favorite mask out of a dozen.

"Crazy people diving in this cold water" Is was 18' cels. That is warm bathingwater.

  5. Congratulations!

  6. The Queen reference was to your celebration last time you won this title.

  7. I am thinking about joinig the competition next year, probably the Grevelingen one.

Kees, can you explain me a bit what is allowed on the processing side. can you use raw, or is it jpg only.

E.g. white balance: just the kelvin and hue settings, or can you use something like the colour wheel as well.

Contrast; just the contrast slider, or can you also use curves and levels. I asked the organiser a question about this once, and he said i could use that, unless i recieved a message back it was otherwise

  8. @Alex: hahaha, :P I thought you ment the reflecting disc on my girl's face. I already got some reactions that those masks are "not done" anymore.

Well, the reaction of the organisator is actually the truth. It really is no hard rule.

    What I did:

    I used RAW (ofcourse)

    WB: only Kelvin and hue

contrast: only plain levels, no curves

    sharpen: smartsharpen in PS

You probably get away with a lot more, but I didn't.

Just join the championship, not the Grevelingen-cup (It is for starters). You really will learn a lot, you have to shoot in 4 different categories and that is a whole different thing.

You have to make a good plan on forehand, scouting the divesites weeks before, planning the dives for tides and currents etc. etc. I did 6 dives over two days, where the shortest was 17 minutes for the macro (I knew where, what and how I wanted to shoot the picture). The longest was 55 minutes before I finally find a reasonable fish (that is the only categorie you can't plan).

  9. Without wanting to hi-jack the thread too much, I think that oval masks are too dated for diving magazines (although many still use pictures featuring them) because they don't represent real divers and diving. But I think that they are perfectly acceptable in artistic images - where the photo is not necessarily trying to represent reality. In much championship photography (such as yours) they are seen as essential - just as important and shooting all the categories. So stick with it.

    Alex

  10. Well, I am hi-jacking it a bit as well with my questions. I still see myself as a beginner. especially at wide-angle (of which there are 2 categories). I have some nice shots, but I'm not sure if I'm consistent enough or if they were just luck. I don't dive often enough I think (there's work and rugby as well). I'll give it a shot tough...

just another heads up for Kees then. Because it is about getting it right on those 2 days, and he did it.

  11. The winning wide angle and the winning macro are of the same subject? That must be pretty unusual!

  12. Congrats!

Indeed, same subject for macro & WA, both great images!
