what lens to buy for my first digital slr

  1. I am have recently decided to upgrade my compact camera to an slr. I have pretty much decided on the canon eos 30D over the 400. what i cant decide on is what lens to buy with the camera. my main use of the camera will be underwater though i will want use on land. eventually i will buy seperate lens ie macro and wide angle, but at first i would like to start with a lens that i could use both in and out of water. the canon comes with two lens options 18-55 ef-slens or 17-85 ef-s is lens. or body only and buy lens seperate?

I would be looking to house the camera in a ikelite housing with a dome port?

Advice would be greatly appreciated on

    1. the 30D over the 400

    2. lens type to buy

    3. choice of housing and dome port

    Gratefull for all replies

  2. i got a fisheye as first lens for my 30D ... now i also have the 60mm and 100mm macros ...

but i startet with the 10-17 tokina fisheye ... i use that one as my land lens as well ... quite extreme to use the FE on land but also very funny. under water it is definately to prefer over the two lenses you mentioned. for UW use you either want macro or wideangle. at least to start with.

if fisheye is too extreme what about the ef 10-22? that one you could use on land as well.

  3. thanks for the advice. i bought a 40D in the end and have ordered the tokina 10-17 fish eye as they seem to get the thumbs from everyone in this forum.

Just got to decide next on what housing to buy?
