Last week I returned from a 13 day trip to the Philippines. We stayed at the Atlantis Resorts in Puerto Gallera and Dumaguete. Given the population pressure on the ocean resources, I was impressed by the abundance and diversity of sealife. There were no big fish, but there was an abundance of macro subject. I saw all sorts of things I had only seen in books or on the web. It certainly was a macro paradise. I left the 100mm macro and my flipup macromate on the camera all week, except when visiting Apo Island which called for my 17-40mm lens.
I will be editing for weeks, but here are a few macro images to whet your appetite. As usual, click on the images for more details
hey steve,
nice photos
have you been diving anywhere else is SE asia? If so, I was wondering how you compared Puerto Gallera / Dumaguete to other places you've dove.

Scott,
This is only my second trip to SE Asia. Last year we visited Sipidan which was beautiful, but the Philippines had a greater diversity of macro life. Sipidan was notable for the enormous schools of fish and the incredible abundance of turtles.
Steve:
Did you miss Mabul when you were diving Sipadan? Macro diversity looks similar, and there are some fish, too!

We spent two days diving at Mabul which I greatly enjoyed. For some reason, which I don't remember, I had my 17-40 lens on, which was completely inappropriate so I didn't get too many good images. We found juvenile harlequin sweetlips and pygmy seahorses. We also found a nice big crocodilefish. We didn't see any ribbon eels or frogfish. Of course, there is always next time
