Sea&Sea DX-1G with an INON D2000 Strobe

  1. Hi,

Have someone tried the new "hard-to-get" ( atleast here in Europe) Sea&Sea DX-1G together with an INON D2000 Strobe? Or atleast found out if it would work? Sea&Sea would of course not say anything about it.

i think it would work . the inon strobe is optical fired and the dx1g has full manual control . a concern i would have is the issue of screen darkness on the dx1g in manual mode , i saw one unit in use on the weekend and noted this....... otherwise the dx1g looks like a nice unit.

Has anyone asked the S&S support if they plan to issue a firmware fix for this? (Sea and sea support below only answers to the American markets, so pls. go ahead below, Americans ;-):

It should really be trivial firmware to fix this. Is this 'feature' also annoying on the topside? If so Ricoh may be interested in issuing a firmware fix anyway.

Yep.... I've got a DX-1G with D2000 strobe and works very well.

Only issue is covering the internal flash. The diffuser in the housing is far too smal; still get backscatter from internal flash.

I covered it with Inon clear film system, but that is almost impossible to stick on. Not enough room to use the original sticky bit.... and the flash unit doesn't close properly anymore!

    Other than this.... great cam!!!

  5. Sorry for not having looked at this for a while.

I managed to have a look at it myself, unfortunately dry only. It works just nicely.

My biggest worry was how to cover the internal flash. Just like you have seen, Pennywise. Have you come up with a solution so far? I was assuming that it must be possible to get something sticky and dark covering it in there somehow.

Well, he Camera would be for my wife. I hope that I will not have to wait too long for my Pics :-)

    Cheers,

I have never physically touched this camera, so I am not sure how it can be done, but a good material to block light from the strobe and still allow control for the external strobe through optic fiber is unexposed but developed slide or a piece of black area from a radiograph.

For my Oly 5050 what I've done is to cut a piece from the unexposed begginig of a slide roll just a bit bigger than the internat strobe. Then, using adhesive velcro, I have cutted a frame of about 1-2mm wide to go arround the internal strobe and on the slide film. It has worked flawlessly for many dives.

  7. I have absolutely no experience of the DX-1G nor any knowledge of how much space there is between the inside of the housing and the camera flash but I have used an alternative to INON infra-red film.

A friend markets 3.1mm thick optical plastic infra-red filter material which he sells to hunters who use night vision rifle sights. They use this material to cover the front of their hunting lamps, thereby turning them into infra-red illuminators, which is only visible through the night vision sights.

I have attached this material to the inside of a housing which of course achieves the same as the INON film stuck into the flash but it is far more adaptable and can be cut and fashioned to fit any housing, provided there is sufficient clearance.

It comes in 5" x 4" sheets and IIRC costs in the region of £20.00

Were coud we find this material ?

Could you give us a link ?

    Thanks :D

The S&S YS-25 comes with adhesive velcro to put on a housing for its optical connection. This has worked fine for me on various housings. It would seem like a reasonable attempt for the DX as well if you can make it fit. The adhesive has never come off during many dives and the 'mask' is velcro's on so it can be removed when desired.
