New Heinrich's External TTL converter

  1. I just saw something in the newest issue of UWP that really piqued my interest. It looks like Mr. Heinrich is now offering an external version of his converter which is mounted to a TTL sync cord. It looks very similar to the Ikelite external TTL converter actually.

So you attach it to your bulkhead, then attach your TTL sync cord to the converter.

Currently only Nikon cameras are supported (BOOOO!) but hopefully he will support us Canon shooters soon.

    Cheers

Interesting... Nice to be able to switch it off without having to access the inside of the housing. 350euros... ouch, for us who get paid in dolares... :)

Canon E-TTL is being done, but is +4 weeks away.

  4. Did the Ike one ever get released?

  5. I'm very interested in this, but don't get the charts for suitable strobes. I use YS-90s sowhat would the limitations be?

    Cheers,

    Marli

  6. He has a chart of compatible strobes, most Inons and older S&S seem to be supported. Notably the S&S YS110s are not.

My only issue besides the cost, it that the only way to adjust EV is with the camera, unless my understanding is incorrect :) There are some "reed" switch settings, but I don't think that's going to work out to be very easy uw.

It'd be nice to be able to use the 13 step controls on the back of my Inon z240s for EV.

  7. Hi Jack,

Download the tech manual from his website - this converter is the bomb!

It has dip switches where you can set your strobe type, TTL type, and I think built in EV +/-

    It's a very smart design.

Thanks for the info Ryan. Of course, he'd wait until JUST after I've bought a Sea and Sea TTL converter, right?

    Cheers

James, I did look through it. The EV is set in the controller using a reed switch; I believe that requires a small magnet to move the dip switches inside. That wouldn't be practical uw. Near as I can tell EV is then only set on the camera, not on the strobe?

Somehow I get a bad visual when you say a strobe controller is the "bomb" :)

  9. Hi Jack,

You've been around a long time so I know you remember when the EV +/- control was only accessible on the camera, right? Your choices were TTL w/ Exposure compensation on the camera, or manual strobe control on the strobe head.

I guess we all got spoiled by the Ikelite and Sea and Sea controllers :-)

I personally find that when using TTL, I only adjust the Ev +/- once on a dive. If it's black sand then it gets a - and if it's white sand then it gets a + That's about it. The Aquatica S2pro housing had an excellent stay-depressed control that you could use on the Ev +/- button. The camera would still shoot w/ the button depressed too. So you could leave it like that, and if you needed compensation, you just rotated the command dial.

    Cheers

    James

  10. Only Sea & Sea's TTL Converters offer external EV Adjustment. When using them I change it several times a dive, and I'm glad it is there.

  11. Is anyone currently using this converter? If so, would like to hear your thoughts on this.
