Scorpion Fish?

  1. I took this photo in Cozumel. It was on a night snorkel right off the dock. 6ft of water. The fish was about 7-8" long.

  2. Try under parrotfish sp. :)

  3. Yep, it is a female Redtail Parrotfish (Sparisoma chrysopterum).

  4. Yep, it is a female Redtail Parrotfish (Sparisoma chrysopterum).

Thanks all. i think i'm on the right track however I think it shares more distinctive characteristics with the red band (esp. the eye) than the Red Tail. I also found a photo online where it was half exactly like my photo and half grey. However, I'm certain now that it is a parrot fish.

  5. You can trust me on this one, I've worked with these fish before, it is the Redtail (Sparisoma chrysopterum), I have absolutely no doubt. You can check another photo here:

The only difference between your photo and the one on the link above are the brown bands, which they only "turn on" at night.

  6. Thanks. What's wierd is going into my one caribbean book and looking at the red tail photos and seeing fish that look different than my photo. Your photo nails it.
