Question about Amphibico Monitor

2 posts
  1. Hi All:

I'm looking to purchase an external monitor for my Gates VX2000 housing. The choices are the Gates 2 1/2" or the Amphibico 3 1/2". My Gates housing already has a video out wet "T" connector installed.

I'm leaning toward the Amphibico product because it's larger and about $400 cheaper (new) than the Gates. I've been looking for a used Gates 2 1/2", but have been unsuccessful.

Will the Amphibico work on the Gates housing with the existing connector ? I called the company but didn't get a real "good" answer about the connector. I like Gates, but the Amphibico product has a larger viewing area and is cheaper.

    Anything else I should consider?

    THANKS!

    Andy

  2. Not sure if it would work but Amphibico say it "Easily mounts on top of all Amphibico or other brand housings". They say that about their 16:9 monitor too, but in practice it's far from easy.

I thought the mounting was different so check that. No doubt one of the dealers who reads this could tell you for sure.

A mate of mine had that Amphibico 3 1/2" monitor. Did a few dives with it over a few years then when he wanted to sell his rig it had just completely died. He was in the UK so it wasn't stored somewhere particularly humid. It cost him a very expensive repair. Possibly a one-off case but worth bearing in mind. My Gates 2 1/2" monitor did about 1000 dives over 4 years and still works fine, although I did once have to shorten the cable after it fatigued through where the gland is.
