Heinrichs TTL board + Z240s on manual

  1. I was wondering something - if you have a Heinrichs TTL board and are using Inon Z240s, is it possible to override the board and set the strobes manually (by changing the mode on the strobe), or do you have to go the EV +/- route?

    TIA,

    Hi Vandit

Not sure if you're 'overriding the board' or what you exactly mean with the 'EV +/- route', but if your question is if it's possible to switch between TTL and Manual with Z240:s and the HW-converter? the answer is yes. There are two ways depending on what version of the converter you have.

For TTL the camera flash synch should be on FRONT curtain. Converter on. Advanced Cancel Curcuit (a.k.a. the magnet) pushed in and locked, strobe(s) set to FULL or sTTL

    To get manual strobe handling:

    1. change the flash synch curtain to 'rear' on the camera

    or

    2. Let the 'Advanced Circuit Button' on the strobe out

Try and see what works on your kitchen table.

But also consider to shot Manual+TTL where the TTL works as an 'override'-protection. Converter on. Setting on the strobe(s) should be: Advanced Cancel Circuit-button pushed in and locked, MANUAL and then adjust the strobe output on the strobes EV-control button. If you overcook it, TTL steps in.

This is how it works with my D200. Might be differences with other camera models and brands. Should be similar though.

    Good luck

  3. Hi Christian -

That is exactly the answer I was looking for. From the 1 day I did manage to get the Heinrichs TTL board working, it seemed the fiddling with the Advance Circuit Button did switch from TTL to manual - good to confirm this.

    Appreciate the help!

    Vandit

  4. Can I ask why front-curtain sync. is needed?

I'm getting used to Z-240s and using optical cable: sTTL is fine with rear-curtain sync., as far as I can see.

Is this peculiar to electronic TTL and the Heinrichs board?

  5. Tim, I'm no expert on the technical aspects of exactly h o w it works, I just know it works in practise. But I t h i n k the converter is 'programmed' to only trigger the main flash when rear curtain is selected. No preflash - no light measure, it just delivers the dialed in values. It also works in fully manual when you release the Advanced Curcuit-button.

Haven't examined the optical route, because I was so pleased with the results from the converter. It is very possible that none of the above applies when you go optical. I'm no expert, better get a second opinion.

    cheers

  6. i also use the 240 optically ... when ich switch in between ttl and manual, i just change the mode and the magnet button. in for ttl out for manual.

  7. Have any of you guys found a solution to using optical cables - ttl and not having problems with the flash reflecting inside the domeport?

so fare i have not used the optical cable becuse i cant find a solution to this problem... But they are laying here waiting...
