Ikelite ds 50 strobes have something ratteling around inside???

  1. I just got my ds 50 strobes back from ikelite and now they have something ratteling around inside of them, is this normal?

They appear to be working just fine, but its a little disturbing.. The odd thing is that its in both of them??

Could it be those little 'snap-ring' like thingies that hold the screw into the battery compartment door? I'd think they'd be held down firmly between the screw post and the door when the unit was loaded with batteries and closed up tight, but I could be wrong. Or is the sound inside the front-end of the strobe (e.g. you hear it even with the battery compartment door off and no batteries inside?

  3. Even with the batteries out and the door off I can still hear something rattleing around inside.. Like I said I just got them back from Ikelite so Im really suprised, and the fact that its in both strobes??? Just plain weird.

Very. I assume you've contacted them to ask if there's anything you should be worried about? Please let us know the response! I can imagine just a wire loop flopping around or something if it wasn't potted down, assuming it was a high gauge and not too rigid, or a small piece of plastic broken off in there. But if it's something metal inside, I guess if the electronics aren't completely potted with some sort of dielectric puckey there'd be a chance of a short at some point.

Now that you got me thinking about it, I just checked mine (bought used, never been back to Ike to my knowledge) and it has a slight rattling sound too! It's louder with the battery door off than on, but there's no sign of anything loose in the battery compartment itself (don't think the contact springs are 'soft' enough to rattle, and the screw post itself seems tight).

  5. The reflector is loose and rattles in my DS125. Went through 3 replacements which were all the same. Came to the conclusion that they all do it and stopped worrying.

  6. Mine have rattled from the day I bought them.

I don't think I would be too concerned.

  7. OK, the thin metal reflector being loose in the 'barrel' of the flash could certainly explain the sound, and would be a total non-issue. I can't see it moving, but I guess I wouldn't easily be able to if it's not moving much....
