Christmas Present NEED help for D80 Housing and lenses

10 posts
  1. Hi all,

I am in totally in confusion !

    My setting for now is:

    Canon a620 - Canon WPDC90 - Sea&Sea YS60TTL/N and YS50TTL with digital Adapter

I purchased a Nikon d80 and I would like to take it UW.

I'm planning to use it for Wide angles photo, I'll take the canon for the macro ones for now.

    I'll buy a Nimar housing , the only one I can afford. ( 770 Euro - 1000 $)

I have some questions for the expert.

    1) is there a way to use my 2 strobes with this setting (I thought to use 1 connected directly and one in slave trough the digital adapter) the housing has a nikonos 5 poles connector

    2) will this setting work in TTL?

    3) can you suggest me a TTL flash for this setting if the above doesn't work keeping in mind my wide angle aspirations:-) ?

    4) the hardest part , can U suggest me a CHEAP wide angle lens for a beginner in this type of photo?

A good things about NIMAR housing is that they are at only 100 km from me and they told me that can arrange the housing on my specific need ad optics.

  2. Hi Claustro,

just a shot at some of the questions:

1, a nikonos to sea and sea double sync might work, or the slave function.

    2. I'm pretty sure it won't do TTL

    3. you might look into the Heinrich Weikamp adapter if you need TTL. check the site to see if they work with your strobes.

4 What is cheap :-) Have a look at the Tokina 10-17mm FE zoom often talked about ar wetpixel (use the search), or a Sigma 15mm FE.

not the greatest pic to illustrate (especially because of the camera shake) but the gurnard was only a few cm's in front of me. The 15mm FE translates to around 11-12mm rectangular.

Gerhard already answered 1, 2 and 3, I believe. Check on www.heinrichsweikamp.net if your strobes are compatibel with their iTTL-converter and a D80. I think your best bet will be a 15 mm Sigma, which is reasonably cheap, but have stellar performance. Get a large domeport for it (minimum 15 cm in diameter). For a rectilinear alternative I would reccomend the Sigma 10-20 zoom. Very good for UW-use behind a dome port.

Must confess that I know zilch about the UW-housing you mention and unless you have good sources that it is a reliable product that gives quality results, I would try to save money for a few more months and get an Ikelite-housing, it is well proven. B&H rates it at US$1200, roughly €850. The EURO comes along way these days. Enjoy it while it last

    good luck

Thank you very much for your answer, I have already the adapter from Hinrich and I am using it with my dual strobe setting.

The problem with the d80 is that the housing didn't have enough room for the built in flash to raise up , so I can't trigger the external flash using the built in one.

So, Which stobe I can buy in the range of the begginer line TTL capable ?

Thank you agian I 'll check for the lenses you suggested me.

I love you guys , always very friendly and helpful , regarding the digital adapter from Heinrich check the previous post.

You are right regarding the ikelite price and the euro strength the problem is the duty tax here in Italy , that are roughly 22% :-(( so 690 Euro VS 1000 Euro can do the difference form a happy and an angry wife :-)))

    Thanks

    Andrea

  6. i think both Sea and Sea and Ikelite put the e- or i-TTL converter in the housings. I dont know if Nimar does the same, but since they use the Nikonos plug, I guess it's not TTL with the D80.

Then you would have to look at something like Inon, but I dont know anything about them.

  7. Heinrich/Weikamp has a new external converter. I think that is what you should look at.

How can I use those converter if I can't fire the built in flash?

I am missing some basic knowledge:-(

This is the Nimar Strobo ( 650 Euro !) in bundle with the Housing I'll buy.

Is this link help you suggesting me alternatives?

    Thanks

    Andrea

  9. I think the Nimar housing has an N5 bulkhead connector on the housing where you connect the new Heinrich's external converter. Then you plug your strobe into the converter.

    Cheers

With HW the converter, you do not use the cameras flash optically (like with optical TTL), only the flash signal. I am not familiar with the Nimar housing, but there must(!) be a flash-connection wich can be connected to the cameras hotshoe. But first you need to check if your strobes are compatible with the iTTL-converter and your camera.
