PR Crab ID - Mithrax sp??

  1. Looks very much like a Mithrax to me but I'm having no luck on a possible species. Just doesn't match with any of the guys in my Humann and Deloach reference. From Puerto Rico, Found between 10 and 30 ft associated with the anemone C gigantea. All of them are yellow and very fuzzy with the black banded claws. Ideas?

They're cute little buggers for sure.

  2. Why didn't you like Mithrax cinctimanus? The color is variable and yours doesn't have the red tips on the claws that others do but overall it matches well. The preference for Condylactis gigantea fits too. Here's a couple other images albeit with stronger color:

Well, I grant it could be M cinctimanus with the overall coloring being locality variation, the rub for me is that there is another crab that is definitely M cinctimanus and exhibits the red banded claws in the same area. I don't rule out the phenotypic variation possibility, but there were a sizable number of the yellow fuzzies (never in the immediate vicinity of the red, less hairy cincti) to make me wonder about speciation. Know any good journal references??

  3. Here's one of the images Leslie was referring to:
