Canon g9 with an Ikelite housing

3 posts
  1. I have just purchased a Canon G9 and an Ikelite Housing to replace my aging oly 5060. When I put the camera in the housing I lose the function of flash button and the menu item "flash" becomes grayed out. It appears that once I connect the hot shoe cable the camera is detecting the TTL circuit even though there is no strobe attached. It seems that the internal flash is disabled and the external flash is put in a force mode. When I connect a DS-50 a flash icon appears on the LCD but it seems I have no control to turn the flash off other than to power off at the flash head and to use the internal flash I must open the housing and pull off the hot shoe cable. Can someone tell me if that is normal for a G9 in a Ike housing? The Ike manual does not mention anything about leaving the hotshoe cable off for internal flash use.

    Thanks,

    Tom

  2. yeah, once the hot shoe is connected, the G9 disables the internal flash. I don't have a wired strobe, so I just added a little clip to hold the cable (one of those 3M commander clips).

There shouldn't really be a need to switch between modes while underwater though.

  3. Yeah, once the strobe is conected, can't go back to internal flash. Only time I've ever tried to was when the bats in my strobe died. Can't think of any other reason you may want to!
