G7 Ikelite housing problems

7 posts
  1. I've sent my Ikelite housing back to the states for some 'adjustments', but just wondering if anyone else had found this problem...

Lately, the wheel on the back of the housing, that I use to adjust apature and shutter speed, hasn't been spinning the wheel on the camera. Not sure if this was because something's moved and the camera no longer sits in the right position, but it was OK for the first 6 months or so. Also, the button for the on/off swich has never really lined up properly.

Everything's under warrentee, so appart from having no camera for a few weeks, I'm not too worried about it, jsut curious as to what other people thing.

    Cheers,

    Ry.

  2. Hey Ryan,

This is unbelievable, i had the same problems!!!! From day one i always had to press the on off button really hard on the housing and it did take a toll on my fingers/thumb :D post which i took to wearing gloves(which many dive sites do not allow !! Here's what i did : Ikelite provides a few additional caps(those tiny little black caps you find inside the housing on each button). I added one on top of the other already inside over the on/off switch. This solved the problem. Obviously not the best solution, but sitting in India...and trying to send the camera to Ikelite under warranty..(wonder how long that might take :) This works beautifully.

Ok i also had a similar problem of the wheel and found that one of those caps(described herein above :) )..in front of the camera inside the housing was missing. There are two small tiny metal rods inside the housing that holds the camera while you screw it secure, those are the ones i am talking about. I just replaced the black cap and the wheel within the wheel :D;) started turning again. If the caps were not missing then the only other problem i could possibly see is that the the cover inside through which you see the lcd would have compressed or moved.

    Cheers,

  3. Wasn't one of the caps on the metal pegs, although I did take them off and play around with the pegs - one looked a bit bent, straighened it a little, tried turning different directions, etc, nothing worked.

I was lucky, the importer of Ikelite is only 2 hours away, and near our favorite dive site, so just dropped it in there, and they'll take care of it. Helps that I know the guys there though ;-)

Will keep you posted when I hear what the problem was. Hopefully won't take too long!

  4. Yes my on-off button need a really hard press... leaves a dent in my finger but as it only gets used twice a dive it's not such a big problem for me.

I've had no probs with the aperture/shutter speed dial but on one dive the mode select dial stopped gripping leaving me stuck in custom (which was fine actually) but obviously that's not what you want.

  5. same problem with on/off button

Ikelite was vague on help, only suggesting that I hadnt screwed the camera in hard enough!

my fix: took off rubber tip, added a couple layers of electrical tape (cut in really small circles, to match diameter of metal) and replaced the rubber tip

the wheel doesn't always spin properly, now that you mention it, but I think if I pressed a bit harder it works

  6. Well, I got my housing back this week, and all looks good. Although I guess I wont know for sure until I get in the water this weekend. The nice ppl at Ikelite put a bigger rubber end on the on/off button, so it hits it properly now, and it looks like the screw that holds the camera onto the plate inside the housing has been repositioned, so the wheel lines up again.

When I first got the housing 12 months ago, the wheel worked fine, but by the time I'd sent it back, it didn't turn at all. No complaints though, it was all done under warrentee, so didn't cost me a cent, including freight back to the states. Only problem was it took a turnaround time of 2 months, so I'm dying to get under with it again now!

If I remember, I'll take some photos of the things they changed when I get home tonight, and post them here.

Still reccon it's an amazing camera setup.

  7. As promised: 1st pic shows the new rubber bit over the on/off swich. 2nd pic shows the hole that the screw goes thru - looks like they've re-drilled it so it's further back.
