40D in the 10D housing

  1. Hi All,

A quick visit with my friendly machinist got me a new base tray that lets me use the 40D in my Subal 10D housing! Viewfinder is fully centered as well as the lens opening, but I'm planning on using this for Macro only, this housing also takes the 5D that I will use for Wide Angle.

    The functions that work:

    Shutter Release

    Shutter Speed

    Aperture

    Zoom

    Lens Release

    AF/WB button

    ISO/Drive Button

    * button

    Focus Point selector

Obviously the rear window is much smaller on the 10D that it is for the 40D, however, there's enough there to see the historgram and about 1/3 of the image, might cut down on my chimping during a safety stop! :)

Obviously there are some functions that do not work:

    1) All the buttons along the bottom...however, with an 8GB CF card and shooting RAW, I don't really use the rear buttons all that much. I can delete files on land

    2) Joystick (this wasn't available for the 10D)

    3) AF-ON Button

    4) Mode Dial (but I shoot Manual anyways)

It's not perfect, but it's not having to shell out another $5k for a new housing either....

Can't wait for my trip to Puerto Galera in January!

  4. Sweet! This should be even easier with an Ikelite housing. Anybody tried to make a new back from 1/2 inch polycarbonite, so all back controls are available plus full LCD viewing? Maybe Ike should consider selling just the specific back plates as an upgrade option.

  5. Not as easy w/ the Ikelite housing as the camera mounts to the back plate. W/ the Subal housing, the camera mounts to a tray that slides in. Modify (bigger or smaller) to that tray, then mount the 5D and it slides right in.

I second the rec. for Stu's machinist buddy - he does awesome work.

  6. Thanks James,

Yes, I have also been thinking to modify the Ikelite housing to operate similar to slide-in design. I'm thinking of sacrificing the thick TTL tray attached to the back and mount a custom fit plate to the housing bottom via the two mounts that secure the Ike handles.

I also appreciate the availability of a nearby talented machinist. Mine was a maestro with my crazy Hassy housing modifications. He knows nothing about photography or diving, but makes me any modifications I can come up with from and for old extinct housings. The biggest challenge is him understanding my ideas and needs...

If anybody is interested in my Hassy housing modifications, I will be glad to share.

I will report and share current modification projects as they become reality.

Yeah, but the bodies seem to be almost the exact same size. Even most of the buttons, except for the few on the back, seem to be in the exact same positions too.
  8. Tried it today, and to answer my own question:

Most of the controls on the back do line up, but due to the placement of the tripod whole they don't reach.

  9. Still in the PI, did 21 dives in Puerto Galera last week. Used both 40D and 5D in my modified 10D housing. Both worked great! Using big CF Cards negated the need for delete button. Program set button for playback, and Info mode to smaller thumbnail with histogram and you are set. Never felt the need to use the back buttons at all. Mandarin fish, mimic nudibranchs, Ornate Ghost Pipefish etc...

    Whee!
