Need Help with Equipment Choice

  1. So, as implied by the forum name, I am VERY new to the prospect of underwater photography, but not so new to the hobby in general. I've decided that it's a good time to get involved considering my trip to Belize is coming up and I would LOVE to take advantage of this opportunity and get some good photos while I'm on the reefs.

Do I definitely, for sure, without a doubt, need an external flash/strobe? Bear in mind that all of my pics will be Snorkeling w/in 8-15 feet on the reef in crystal clear water. With that being said, if a strobe helps, how much of a difference will it make in that situation? I know it would make a world of difference in deeper water, but with a wealth of sunlight in the shallow reef, wouuld it even be worth the purchase?

Bear in mind I'm a starving college student who dumps all of his spare cash into photography, but with that being said, every expenditure is huge  Which is why I'm trying to validate this purchase if need be.

Thanks again to all who decide to reply!

  2. Welcome to wetpixel Bama.

If you're just snorkelling in gin clear water, a Magic Filter inside the housing would restore the color and they're a lot cheaper than strobes. Ryan's Reef Photo ...right side of this thread..... could set you up. Not knowing what kind of equipment you have, or plan to use, I really can't comment any further.
