  1. Due to failure of my YS90DX's 2 yrs in a row I'm shopping for replacements. Shooting manaul & don't really need a focus light but that not an option with these 2 strobes. Recommendations?

They're pretty similar in performance. The Inons are according to manufacturers specs. and unbiased tests a stop or two more powerful and has slightly better spread. Temperature is similar (sun light). The Z240 recycle about twice as fast on full dump (1.6 seconds vs 3 for NiMH:s) which is more pronounced in the real world, as you can dial the Inons down a step or two for the same amount of light. Inons are slightly smaller/nimbler and slightly negative (0.13lbs in fresh water according to backscatters test) and the YS110:s are actually slitghtly positive. Inons are rated to 100 meters, the YS110:s to 60. The Inons cost more... So inmo the Inons deliver slightly more in most aspects, but not a lot more. Are they worth the extra cost? It depends... Have you had a look at the YS250:s?

    good luck

  3. hey christian,

I have the Ys-110's, but thought about changing to inon's or ike's at some point for a little more power...and a little faster recycle. although some people seem to prefer the ike's temp.

you say the inon's have slightly better spread, I hadn't read that, strobefinder lists the Ys-110's as having a slightly larger angle of coverage, where did you read that Z240's have a slightly better spread. if that is really true that could seal the deal for me.

    digitaldiver.net strobefinder says :

    YS-110's 105 degrees by 105 degrees

    Z240's - 100 degrees by 100 degrees

    thanks,

    scott

The information is readily available on Inon Amercas and Sea & Sea web pages.

If you look carefully you will find that:

    YS 105° w i t h diffuser

    Z240 100° w i t h o u t and 110° w i t h diffuser.

It's marginal, but the Z240 got the edge. And because they are a little bit more powerful, you can move them back a little bit for even better spread.

    cheers

  5. Hey Guys,

I have just modified my Nexus D70S housing by adding the Inon fibre optic windows.

Very easy conversion. The two windows/ports were $90aud each and the drill/tap the two holes into the housing was about fifty bucks. It works perfectly and now the housing can offer hard wired or fibre optic control over the strobes. I think that I remember Tropical1 saying that he was acheiving great results with the fibre optic S-TTL on his Olympus rigs. Well this is now a viable option for the earlier Nexus rigs also.
