Sea&Sea camera selection help needed

  1. Hi, I read your delightful and informative review of the Sea&Sea 8000 and was wondering about the currently offered DX-860G model? Are the images of the same quality as the 8000? I'm new to underwater photography but don't wish to house my land Dslrs. On land I'm a semi-pro photographer ... in water, I'm a complete guppie. :)

I really would appreciate any and all help you all could provide me.

    Thanks!

  2. I am a beginner photographer land and water...and have the Sea&Sea 860G...I've used it in Honduras and Key Largo...with no external flash/strobe...I now want to upgrade to a DSLR....but if you are just taking pictures for fun...it is great...I printed out some great shots 8x10 and have a series of them on the wall..I just went to a presentation by Sea&Sea and would recommend the new one out....can't remember what it is called, maybe that is the 8000 you are referring to..but it has more features/control....like RAW image format...etc....since you are a semi pro on land you may want to consider the higher end one....

  3. Hi DLMST

I have one of the new Sea & Sea Camera outfits. It is the DX-1G. CAMERA

Just got back from a trip to Kona for the holidays with the outfit.

Here are some shots from the camera: SHOTS FFROM DX-1G KONA DEC 2007

I am happy with the results, but I think I am going to go back to my Nikon D70/Ike rig.

I seem to like the control I have with the DSLR. The DX-1G will be for sale at quiet a reduced price.

I have the complete outfit 2 strobes and the wide angle lens, +++

  4. Fantastic photos!....Let me know what you are selling your gear for...I'm considering a DSLR at the moment...but not sure I want to risk taking it underwater....I'm too much of a beginner.....juli

  5. Hi all and thank you for your input! Your images, Joe, are spectacular indeed!!

Since I'm totally inexperienced in UWP, and in swimming below the surface for that matter (eegads), I really don't want to chance housing my dslrs. Yet, anyway. :P So I was considering the less expensive, possibly more foolproof option of the 860, or similar type. But, if you all think the optics aren't quite up to speed (nothing more frustrating than a well composed but soft, unsharp image, and therefore unusable for print and large enlargements) then I may need to reconsider.

What do you think? Juli, you mentioned that you're considering dslr housings. Joe, you mentioned going back to your dslr. By comparison, what do you think of the 860's optics?

PS: Yep, I shoot RAW 98% of the time and love it!

  6. Joe-

I am wondering what you didn't like about the DX-1G that you are selling it. The photos look great to me! I was debating this camera outfit and also the Sealife DC600 which is quite a bit less expensive. Or if anyone can point me in another direction, that would be appreciated. I have been using an Olympus C-4000 for about 3 years and am ready to move up to strobes and maybe a wide angle lens, plus my housing has a piece broken off so I have to turn it to a pre-programmed mode to get the zoom to activate! I have been reading reviews and feel like I am on info overload and at this point am leaning toward a whole system rather than figuring out individual parts. I live in a very remote area where the nearest dive shop is about 2 hours away and they don't have much in the way of camera equipment r knowledge. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Go with the DX-1G. If I were you I housed my DSLR.

DX-1G is one of the gratest UW compact cameras (As I heard and read), but a DSLR is a DSLR...

Is a matter of time... eventually you´ll end up with a DSLR or quitting at all.
