Something else you can do with an underwatercamera

  1. Perhaps the Dutch are indeed a bit weird. In any way, we love diving into an almost freezing NorthSea at noon on newyears day. :)

So why not bring out the trusty Canon 20D with UK-Germany housing, put on my drysuit and just wait.. till 12?

I manually set the camera to a normal exposure which, in this grey weather, would mean a bit of underexposure. This would mean the photo's with flash were prefect and the photo's taken while the flash was charging were easily corrected.

You're not saying that because of the guy in pink, are you? :)

  7. Fantastic imagery! Brought a smile onto my face.

I'm all for going out there and getting non-traditional underwater / wet photos. :P

  8. Hi,

Hey, it takes huge guts to wear a thong in 2 degree water!

Great stuff, great idea. Is this a dutch hangover recovery method you have kept hidden from the world?

    ahhh, liberal Holland! :P

  15. Great pics, love that first one.

Wow - I did a Google search on this, and it says it's traditional. As in, people jump into a freezing-cold North Sea more than once. That's truly impressive.

Yup, it's called the "Nieuwjaarsduik" which translates to "newyearsdive". There are about 25 of them all over Holland (even one in Amsterdam!) but none on this scale. The second largest has about 1200 divers. Still a lot though.

The orange beanies have that colour becaus it's the national color which also corresponds (not coincidentally) with the last name of our royal familie: the Van Oranjes (orange). A very smart soup brand (Unox) started making these beanies and they've cought on all over the place. They also make gloves that are quite funny.

The Dutch suffer (besides diving in near-freezing water) from Orange-madness. Which is mostly shown on April 30th (Queensday) or any national soccer match.

This looks to be one of those rare cases where subject manipulation would be at least understood if not encouraged. :P I am a little concerned about the young lady in the back left, One big bow?
