100mm macro port for the new housing?

  1. post-4526-1200196196_thumb.jpgI’m getting ready to order the ports for my new Sea & Sea MDX 40D. There are two obvious choices for the 100mm macro port. S&S has their standard solution, a DX macro port and port base. The other possibility is the new Athena solution. Nikon folks have had this option for a while and they are now selling the Canon version shown here.

It’s called the Athena OPF-TMP100 USM, it’s one piece and the potentially cool part is you can use a M67 screw type close-up lens on the outside of the port. Does anyone have any experience with the Athena port? I’d appreciate any advice.

  2. Steve, yeah that Athena port is tempting with the M67 mount on front.

Something else you might consider if you already have a compact macro base and port for your 60mm lens is getting a longer compact macro port front to fit the 100mm macro USM. I use that setup with an Athena focus ring for the 100mm. Nice advantage of this is for traveling when you want to use both the 60 and 100mm and only involves bringing an additional compact macro port.
