WB advice and wide angle lens prob

  1. Having taken on board the useful advice given in the thread where I asked about white balancing my Sony A1, I went out today to try out a new colour correction filter and white balancing.

The kit I'm using is a Sony A1 in an Ikelite housing with the UWL-100 wide angle lens and the UR/Pro green water filter, white balance is set to Auto. I'm also using the Ikelite Pro video light kit.

The images on the link below are taken from my footage filmed at Horsea Island near Portsmouth UK, this is the British Royal Navy's training site and is a salt water lake that gets topped up by the tide. As it's British sea water it's green and I'm using the UR/Pro filter which they describe as Magenta but I'd say it's a bit lighter than that. It was overcast today and it's winter here.

I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts or tips on the following:

Motor cruiser - should I MWB through the filter for wide shots like this with no lights?

Crab - this is using the modeling lamp. Will MWB correct the greenness of the shadow under the crab? (You can also really see the blurring at the edges of the shot that seems to be common with the UWL-100)

Inside LR - this is inside one of the attractions (a Land Rover 4WD). To the bottom of the shot you can make out part of a ghosted ring which I think must be something to do with the wide angle lens. Previously I thought it was the metal edge of the lens on the A1 reflecting but I've now coloured that in black with a marker pen and it's still there. Any ideas what I can do about this?

Cold! - Just to show how keen I was to test out my kit, the water was 6 degrees - that's 43 fahrenheit! You can also clearly see the ghosted ring on the left of the image.

All tips and advice greatly appreciated.

Firstly Geoff that water you are diving in is too bloody cold. Fiji is lovely in the British winter, try that next time. :ninja:

As for your white balance issues. I would say you should always use MWB if your housing allows it. The motor cruiser - yes your suggestion is correct, MWB on a slate or your hand should be good enough.

For the Crab, i would try MWB on the sand in front of the crab - you may have to play around with it a bit - try shooting the sand as close to the camera as you can, then if that is not right, try around 30cm away, 60cm away, etc until you are happy with the colour.

Inside LR - Try the same WB tips as with the crab. The ghosted ring may be from the ikelite housing - i have seen this before with Ikes because they are clear, sometimes the light bounces around inside if you don't position your lights to avoid it. make sure your lights are in front of the lens and not shining on the housing at all, if it is, you can try covering the area that it hits with black tape or paint to prevent the light entering the housing.

Cold - yes, you are mad.

Another note, I am a fan of green water looking slightly green in the video, be careful not to overdo the colour corrections - natural is good.

  3. Also you should have been supplied with a little black plastic guard that came with the housing that you screw into the 37mm thread on your A1 which will block out light which is coming from around the camera body. Also would have meant that you didn't have to colour in your camera.... I did the same thing on my HC1 :ninja:

Aha, I went hunting through the box my Ikelite came in and I found it! Note to self - read manual.

Thanks to you both for the pointers.
