Modeling AKA: Focusing Lights

  1. I was reading a thread that pointed out something that should have been obvious to me, which brings up 2 questions.

Since UW you rarely point the strobes directly at your subject, having a modeling light integrated into the strobe isn't really that helpful. DUH...that's why I have so much trouble focusing unless I aim my HID at what I'm shooting.

The modeling light on one of my DS-125s isn't working, otherwise the strobe is operating normally.

Should I even waste my money sending it in for repair?

What do you normally use, just a small dive light?

    Ok, make it 3 questions:

Do you hold it or mount it to the housing somehow? If so, where and how?

  2. Yes, apparently I'm an idiot. Maybe I should try actually reading a manual every now and then.

I have an HID which I've been using, but even with the goodman, sometimes it's tough to aim the light where I want it, frame my shot, and release the shutter. Also it's really bright. I usually have to try to pull it way really fast and release the shutter, otherwise I get a hot spot.

May need to pick up a small...cheap light, like one of the small UK lights to mount on the housing. Or maybe just bungie one of my LED backups.

  3. Well turns out the problem is with the strobe, not the bulb.

  4. I hate using the DS125's light for modelling purposes. I love the feature though, as when you're in a wreck of cave you can't have too many lights.

I use a fisheye light, but I think anything with a wide beam would be great. Having varying power output levels is also very useful. I mount it to the handles so it is a hands free operation.
