Oceanic Unveils New Heads-up Computer Technology
New Wireless Personal Dive Computer Evolves from Heads-Up Mask Technology Co-Developed by Oceanic WorldWide and the U.S. Navy
Oceanic Worldwide, a longtime leader in new diving technologies, has been working closely with the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command to develop a new scuba mask that displays critical dive data on a tiny LCD display within the mask, giving special operations divers hands-free access to information about air supply, depth and time.
The mask receives the data via a wireless transmitter unit mounted on the scuba tank's first stage regulator, which can tell a diver how many minutes of air are remaining based on the diver's breathing rate, all without cumbersome wires or hoses. The Navy's "heads-up" mask will have immediate military applications. Recreational divers may soon benefit from this jointly created technology. Oceanic is currently studying the feasibility of a consumer version of the "heads-up" mask.
Sharing this wireless technology is Oceanic's new VT Pro Personal Dive Computer, one of the most advanced diving computers available to the general public. The world's first wireless air integrated computers evolved from an Oceanic project that began over a decade ago for NASA's Underwater Test Facility.
The small watch-like receiver is a fully functioning dive computer as a stand-alone unit. In addition to offering many user-defined settings and alarms, it accurately calculates decompression status, oxygen accumulation, maximum depth and time, and displays the information in a large, easy to read format. Coupled with a small wireless transmitter mounted to the regulator first stage, the VT Pro evaluates tank pressure, depth, and current breathing rate to display air time remaining expressed in minutes.
The VT Pro gives complete control of all dive data. Depending upon personal preference or a particular situation, the user can choose between a number of display formats during the dive. Several alarms can be set or deactivated, and alarm values can be changed to match a day's dive plan.
