MacBook Air - Apple's Ultra Portable is Here

  1. Will not replace the tower or high end laptops, but for the size and being able to download photos, back up photos, check email. Perfect. Yes. Though perhaps the MacBook may be better with more USB and FW and a bit bigger.

A big point looks like they addressed some environmental issues. Just wish they had one more USB or FW Port. And perhaps a 5400 RPM Hard Drive, or the SSD start dropping. I may hold off until the next dive trip to see if some updates occur, like they did with the MacBook Pro, the first 15" did not have FW800 ports but were soon added.

With the new small Intel chips maybe a Quad Core MacBook Pro will be coming soon :ninja:

Very cool, also has Ethernet so backing up the first time may be quicker. Very nice. Now all I have to do is get the guts up to install Leopard on one of my machines ;) Played with it on some computers and may put it on a non-crticial laptop in a bit.

  3. I'm not a Mac person, but the specs of the newly announced Macbook Air make it quite inviting for us world travelers... 0.75" thick and 3lb, 1.6GHz dual core cpu, 12" LED screen, 80GB HDD, 5hr battery etc... I wonder how rugged it is...? Would make a great little machine for doing lightroom or light photoshop work in the field.

  4. That add where they take it out of a legal envelope is very catchy.

Clearly designed for the Wireless world. You would have to bring an external HD for backup (iPod sized). It doesn't have FW so you would need a USB2 card reader.

Still for travel I like the size. Cost is high for what you get though.

ooh, missed that omission. Would have been nice if it had firewire...

  6. I'm quite sure Rev.b will have something along those lines. The problem is the IEE1394 boards are pretty think and big....thus not very airy.:)

144MB VRAM tied into the RAM isn't going to be very fast. I'm not sure this is the right computer for anything more than downloading photos (transfered to an external USB drive...good luck with the 1DsIII files :) ) and menial computer tasks like email, word etc. Don't think it's really functional for photogs.

  7. You missed the most important new product from the show:

Don't see how you can live without one of these.

LOL I had seen that posted somewhere else. Truthfully, I am a Mac Junkie, my home is like a museum for the different Macs that have been released, 1/2 dozen iPods, every piece of software they every released I think and I even go scuba diving in black turtlenecks and birks, just as Steve Jobs would probably do. But even I draw the line at some point.

Wonder where I need one of those things in every bathroom or just one :)

  8. Probably just one in your "sit down" bathroom. Might be useful to project into the shower though.
