G9 vs S&S DX-1G Usability

4 posts
  1. Well, with 2 digicam choices for underwater use, now that offer RAW mode, and movies. Which one holds up best to real use?

Which one has the best Autofocus, when conditions are a bit dim, contrast low, and things moving around?

Which one has a short enough final half-press shutter lag, to capture actions as they develop? Especially when the flash is on?

Does the DX-1G LCD darken, when trying to use it at night, in manual mode, with 100% flash providing the only exposure?

I like 24mm wide end, of the DX-1G. But is the image quality, too much of a step back from the G9?

    Are we there yet?

  2. I can only compare my new G9 with the DX-1G's predecessor, the DX 8000G (both DX models are of course, rebranded Ricohs). I liked the DX 8000G, the flash recycling time at high resolutions being the only real issue.

Yes, the DX 8000 lens stops down in manual mode. Shutter lag was not an issue from a half press.

The G9 is a different animal altogether and its functionality has not dissappointed in any respect.

  3. I'm very interested in this as this would help me in my decision making process. I'm also interested in going with a Canon 870 and OEM housing with no strobes. This is going to be my first rig and not sure which way to go. I'm heading to Little Cayman at the end of March. I usually only go on one dive vacation a year and don't know if I can justify the high costs for minimal use.

    Thanks in advance,

    Aaron

  4. I have just bought a G9 - it seems pretty good, but i need more time using it to really comment.

It does have front or rear curtain flash options, RAW obviously, and funtionality is good. The lcd display is excellent and i like the clear menu view when changing settings, very underwater friedly.

    very pleased so far. :)
