Sea & Sea YS-110 TTL isues?

  1. There was another thread on this subject, but I thought I'd broaden it, as I keep getting asked the question too: Will the Sea & Sea YS-110 work with a Canon G9 for instance? What about a Sony dscW-80...Olys?

I do know it works very well with the Coolpix cameras.

It seems that the YS-110 is a bit picky about how many preflashes it will work with? The specs say it will only ignore 1 preflash. I'm thinking that cameras with multiple preflashes wouldn't work in DTTL?

Is there a list of supported cameras somewhere?

I'm sort of hoping the S&S rep will reply, please!!

    Thanks,

    Jack

  2. I have been having major problems with the TTL on the YS-110 when paired with the Sea&Sea DX-1G. I get very inconsistent results - i.e. if I take 4 shots of the same, stationery subject, without changing any settings, I will get 4 different exposures ranging from blasted out to so underexposed you can't see the picture. I have also done a dive with the YS-110 strobe paired with the Sea&Sea DX8000G, and got the same inconsistent results. However, my buddy dove my DX-1G with his Sea&Sea YS-27DX strobe & the exposures were bang on each time (although the 27DX isn't capable of TTL). I have sent the information to Sea&Sea through my local dive store & await their answer - my conclusion is that the strobe is either faulty & just doesn't do TTL very well!

I would be most interested to hear of any other experiences with this strobe.

  3. Are shooting in manual or automatic on the camera?

  4. I'm unsure about the YS110 but when I upgraded my SP350 to an Olympus E-410 my YS27DX stopped working in auto flash mode with the new DSLR. In order to get it to work you had to set the flash in the E410 to complete manual and select a power output. This effectively disabled the preflash in the camera. For whatever reason the YS27DX was not compatible with the preflash in the camera. I can't imagine the YS110 being any different with Oly cameras. I called both Oly and Sea&Sea and neither had any interest on testing the system. I upgraded to an Inon Z-240 and life's been good since.

I have a G9 and two S&S strobes ... a YS-15 and a YS-27DX. I have no problem getting them each to fire in either Auto Modes (TV or AV or P with a pre-flash) or in Manual Mode (no pre flash). The G9 has a single pre-flash in Auto modes.

What I was told by a guy behind the counter at B&H was that the TTL circuitry in the YS-110 didn't "read the flash right" and that while the flash would fire, the D-TTL "would work right".

I really hope the S&S guys can help clear this up ...

  6. I have shot in both manual & automatic - there was still the same inconsistency in exposures.

This whole exercise has been very frustrating - I bought the new setup (DX-1G & YS-110) because I loved the idea of a 2.5" screen (age, you know :) ), and the target light on the strobe. But unless I can solve this problem, I'll get the YS-27DX instead.

  7. Well, the YS-110 is quite a bit faster and more powerful as well. Being able to upgrade it in the future to a DSLR, makes it the better choice. Manual control isn't all that bad a thing, either, and again the YS-110 has 13 steps of control vs. 8.

  8. FWIW a friend of mine using an Oly SP-350 and a YS-110 reports the same inconsistencies when trying to use TTL with a F/O cable.

Hard wired with H/W bulkhead, no problem.

I too am interested in hearing the response from S&S.

  9. Hi Scuba Mom

I also have the new D-1G with a YS-110 strobe. I do not have a consistency problem with identical settings. I do have a problem, however, that the target light seems to interfere with my TTL settings. When the target light is set to ON, it will turn itself off automoatically when the strobe fires and my shots are underexposed. When I fire the exact same shot with no target light, my shots are properly exposed because the TTL meter knows exactly how much light the strobe needs to fire. Do you have this problem too?

I'm too inexperienced to pass judgment on the system, so I have to imagine that some of my problems are due to "operator error".

Any tips from someone with more experience in this area would be much appreciated.

  10. Hi skneisel,

I was shooting with the target light on, and had problems with inconsistent exposures. Interestingly enough, I came across another thread on this site (in the Consumer Digicams/Housings forums) about the camera itself not having TTL capabilities - see the thread on "Upcoming Sea & Sea DX1-G camera" on the last page. I have forwarded this information onto my local dive shop who is assisting me in this matter. They have already sent my strobe back to Sea&Sea (at the company's request). So now I'm really confused - is it the camera or the strobe? I'll keep you updated.

    Hi All,

I bought the DX1-G and 2 YS-110 primarily becuase of the attraction to TTL and did 9 dives in Thailand pre xmas, to be honest the results were worse than my old set up of a Canon powershot 4MP and a single Epoque strobe with fibre synch.

I am amazingly suprised that Sea&Sea haven't issued any form of guidance on this set up, it has many advantages, but seems we have to try and work this out by trial and error, and blogs !!

In general using TTL created a dullness and lack of colour depth / clarity

if anyone gets the answers would love to know !!

  12. I finally have a "sort of" answer back from Sea&Sea (via my dive store & the Canadian distributor) - they have said that "the YS110 Stobe has been confirmed with a problem. It is a warranty and they are fixing it - should be back in two to three weeks..." However, they haven't said what the "problem" is. I am going to ask my dive store to see if they can find out what the problem was, and will keep you all posted.

Has this strobe been fixed to your satisfaction?

  14. Has this strobe been fixed to your satisfaction?

Well I have now finally got to the bottom of this problems (in fact it is 2) having used the Sea&Sea contact on Scubaboard.

Problem 1 - When using fibre sych cables with S&S DX1-G the synch cables are not positioned correctly on the housing = reduced light = inconsistent strobe firing. There is an adaptor available part no 0226 which is available FOC from Sea&Sea - all advice and feedback is to get it

problem 2 - Ys110 - Sea&sea have confirmed faults with this, which have been solved it appears with the YS110a (alpha)
