Switching from Nikon to Canon...?

Hi,

I would very much like to hear your opinion on the following:

I started U/W photography about 9 months ago, when I bought a Subal D10 housing + Nikon D100. I have a Sigma 10-20mm for WA (with SWB port) and a 60mm nikkor for Macro. Although I love the system (Subal works great), I really want to upgrade to a better camera.

I am very close to buying a Canon 1ds II + subal housing and FE2 port for a good price.

Since I am still in university, I can not afford to buy a completely new system within the next 2 years. I figured out it might take a while before the new D3X comes out and photographers start selling their D2Xs systems. Also very few D200 owners are switching to a D300 + my own system is depreciating every day. I am looking for a system that I can use for the next 3/4 years.

Would you in my position opt for the 1Ds II + Subal housing? Or would you recommend something else?

That would be a pretty good way to go, IMO. There are many people moving from the DsII to the DsIII right now and there are some deals to be had. The combo is really excellent too.

Thank you James. What W/A lens would you recommend? What lens do you use for Macro?

I use the Sigma 50mm macro, the Canon 100mm, and the Sigma 150mm.

I'll be coming to the Netherlands in mid-Feb if you want me to bring you anything.

ps. Do you know if the 1d II, 1ds and 1ds II all have similar buttons? Or do they need to make a modification in the housing (Subal)?

The buttons on the 1DmkII and 1DsmkII are the same. The buttons on the 1d and 1ds are different.

The Subal mkII housing has extra buttons so that it will be compatible w/ both. Look for 5 lower buttons - and if you've got them you've got the MkII housing.

It's official now: I betrayed Nikon

I bought a 1ds II Subal housing and I am going to buy a 1d II to begin with. I also have a FE2 port, so I can finally start shooting fisheye B)

Are there any specific things I need to know about the 1d II?

One more question: I just found out that the 10-22mm does not work with the 1D II.

Since I am somewhat limited in my budget, what lens would recommend for W/A (taking the 1.3 cropfactor in account)? A 17-40mm (22.1) is not so super-wide.

Sigma 12-24 f4.5-5.6 - it works on full frame and cropped cameras.
