Opening a ss200 (Old Style)

  1. I bought a used ss200 Ikelite strobe that just got here. Its working fine, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get into the battery compartmant to recharge the batt?

This is not the newer style that has the o-ring in the lid that you screw off and the battery slides right out. Anyone ever used one of the older 200's that can give me a hand?

    Thanks

    Bob

  2. All Ikelite SubStrobe 200 models have a back cap that unscrews to access the battery compartment. It can stick if not unscrewed "about 2 hours" after tightening. Following URL has some suggestions:

  3. Ike,

I can get the back lid off no problem. (I assume your talking about the black piece with the f-stop guide wheel on it)

How do I get to the battery once that is off? My main strobe is new, it has an oring in the back cover and the battery slides out when opened.

This unit seems to have the sealed compartment inside the unit. there is a plastic post sticking up in the center of the unit that you can turn which will stick two plastic pieces out to hold the back cap on. The back screw-on cover on this unit has no o-ring, and doesn't appear to be water tight.

I guess I am dense, I still can't see what I am suppose to unscrew after i get the back cover off to access the battery?

ps: I am told that this unit was recently updated and serviced by the origianl owner. I have a message to him, but hes out diving :D

  4. Nevermind Ike, I figured it out. Apparantly the flight had created a vacum and made the inside cover to the battery compartment tough to open.

    All is well!

    Thanks

    Bob

  5. The plastic thingies to which you refer must be "in" before screwing the cap onto the strobe. Then screw the cap back onto the strobe. Stick a screw driver into the center hole and turn the pawl ninety degrees. This will make the plastic thingies stick out. These thingies will now lift the center section of the back our of the body when you unscrew the cap.

This is the easy to disassemble for cleaning back that did not have the pawl turned properly to keep the assembly together after cleaning.

I apologize for the sophisticated terms required for my addled brain to describe the problem. Let me know if this analysis is correct............

  6. Thanks Ike! Now that I got the back off the first time it works perfectly and I understand completely what you meant.

I am glad I did not know that part about the plastic thingy b4 i got it off, It was on so tight I am sure it would have broken them.

Thank you again for the responses.
