Hey everyone, well I got my new setup in the water and used a gel called Bastard Pink as a filter because filters wont work with my lens setup. So the combo of the filter and a really great MWB turned my light cannon red. Do you normally not use lights when using a filter and MWB? If so does anyone gel their lights to correct them to color temp accurate? I was thinking of printing a frame from the video where the red is present and trying to correct it by overlaying gels at my local film utilities dealer. Does this sound like it would work?
does the article written from a photo still point of view help at all ?
It has a lot of information about all of this and post processing the results. Just not aimed at video.
Or the Aussie way, put some blue plastic from like a blue plastic bag over the end of your lights. Cost $0
Use a rubber band to hold it there.

That's basically what I was thinking. Putting a gel that would color correct it perfectly on the inside of the light. Hopefully I can get the color down.

most tend not to do MWB and lights when shooting WA, that kinda makes a mess of the far colours. If you do try that, make sure you put the lights on object you are WB on. If you WB on an object and then introduce the lights, then yes, they will turn red. Same like if you WB at 60ft and move up to 30ft, everything red.
So yes, light filters work or else WB with the lights on

Let's say I did a MWB to the lights and did not gel the lights, would everything come out ultra blue or green because the lights have more red in them? Just curious.
Thanks!

hmm.. the only time i have actually mwb with the lights and filter is when shooting a tight scene, no problems there. maybe a bit warmer than usual bu t i like that.
Shouldn't be too much of a problem, i do it with my still set up a lot and never have a problem. With temps and colours of video though, maybe a bit different. I personally don't use mix lighting a lot (has to do with the fact i am too cheap to buy proper lights... )

Well I'm not sure if this is considered mix lighting or not and I'm right there with you when it comes to budget lighting, light cannons all the way my brutha!
I've got this footage of entering this wreck in hawaii and finding this good sized white tip and the only way I could have even seen him was with my LC100. It's just a shame everything came out pink for that shot. I guess it's all pretty easy to CC in Apple Shake or Apple Color because you can isolate certain colors and areas so maybe I'll just stick to that method. I just hate going with the "fix it in post" mentality, I'd rather get it right the first time, then you've got more latitude to play with later.
Appreciate the help!

Thats why if you had access to preset A&B WB you could flick it over to a colder temp for lights on the run. I think there is on one of Gates for the V1.
There is on the XHA1 and Gates....
Are there you go, maybe the other housing mobs will start to as well on their top of the line models.
I know it's hard for their basic line models as most of the customers are point and shoot people and not us fussy buggers. Point and shoot people do not want to spend thousands on their $1500 camcorder to get it underwater so features like that are left off.
in the white tip situation. i would quickly reset the WB with the lights shining on the sand or slate or whatever you use for WB. then the foreground colour should be good. Then its just the background that might be a little off but shouldn't be too bad. better than a pink shark

I'm pretty sure I have access to the a/b switch but I'm shooting W/A so I'm trying to correct for W/A with lights. If I balance to the lights the blue/green water will be the wrong color. That's why I'm trying to figure out if a gel will solve this problem. Man shooting video is a pain, I have to gel the camera, gel the lights and MWB. Does everyone do this, or am I just an idiot and doing something wrong? I forgot to mention that when shooting in Hawaii mid january with the gel on the lens and MWB some of the water came out with a purple gradient, has anyone experienced this?

Unfortunately that shot in particular was only about 15 sec long. Right when we entered the wreck of the San Pedro we saw the shark and he swam around and then out.
Another problem I ran into is that my slate is too small and takes a few extra seconds to MWB because I have to zoom in for it to fill the frame completely. Are there and larger slates available? Maybe 10"x10"?
Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions!

you should only have to fill about 2/3 of the frame to get a good WB. You can also try pointing at the sun or sand or even light coloured coral or palm of your hand.
Another popular one is wearing one glove with a neutral gray palm on it, that works nicely too
