Cosmetics giants agree to stop using shark oil

  1. "With the decision to end using shark-based squalene, Unilever has joined other European-based cosmetic companies that informed Oceana that they do not use this product from threatened animals and prefer sustainable plant-based sources. "

With so much bad news for sharks, it is nice to see some positive news!

  2. Well, their cooperation isn't particularly altruistic. The substitute is actually cheaper. The consumer actually prefers formulas without animal products in it (as they step to the counter in their leather shoes).

The move to BT (bio-tech) alternatives to animal derived ingredients has been ongoing for at least 15 years.

    Good news anyway.

  3. Well my list of shark content squalene cosmetic products (not updated since Dec 2006 because I managed to convince the almighty HER not to use these products):

    Shu Uemura

    HABA

    Mayumi

    Bobbi Brown

Neutrogena (a few of their sunblocks are squalane free)

    M.A.C

    Animal free products:

    Origins

    Aveda

    Mario Badescu

    Dermatologica

Note: this is not a complete list but a few that don't have animal products in them.

Well, even if the reason was in their own self interest maybe it will point the way for others to look for an alternative.

You have got to be happy about any good news that might stem the destruction of the speices.

Olive derived squalene may not be identified differently than shark squalene on an ingredient statement.

Squalene is a wonderful ingredient, but there are many other alternatives. It's so 80's. People just don't want animal products. Well, they say they don't, but if Yorkie liver extract made you look ten years younger, the same women who don't want animal products would start their own Yorkie puppy processing mills.

Sure George, but I checked with the manufacturers :) I can't shoot Bobbi Brown and M.A.C without reason.

And if you look at the trend, many women wouldn't want it... but SOME women will. It's called market forces.

  7. List of non-animal squalene products updated.

Oh and men use the products too... right Simon?
