Does anyone mix 24p and 60i footage in editing ?
I was thinking of 24p for topside scenery and interviews with 60i UW footage. Final video will be recorded back to camcorder for HDMI playback on an HDTV. Hobbyist only, mainly making vacation videos.

Ron,
I've done this a little and just converted the files using media manager in FCP, it works can get a bit tedious with the rendering though. What editing suite are you using? I'm sure Wags will pipe up and say that Edius you just drop the footage in and no worries at all ![]()

I use Sony Vegas. Which files are you converting the 24p or 60i ? What framerate do you edit in ?
Depends... I like progressive for 'arty' land shots and interlaced for underwater stuff. I generally convert to what ever I have the most footage. So if the majority is 50i (pal in my case) then I convert to that...
But after messing around with this last week I reckon that is stupid because when I record progressive I loose picture resolution (using a canon A1) then I'm converting back to interlaced???? Doesn't make sense, although it still looks ok.
I am now trying to shoot a project in either one or other to avoid this, basically if the job involves underwater or any 'action' shoot in 50i. If it is an arty promo type thing 25p(f).

Just remember going from 60i to 24P you are losing frames and the 3:2 pull down can possibly make video look choppy.
However, 24P does save space on a DVD and with the correct flags, the DVD will play it at 24fps.

Vegas will ingest this stuff nicely. Just create a project with the finished formatting you want, drop in the sources and have at it. Vegas does all the legwork.

FCP 6 is open format timeline (which is really realtime format conforming meaning no need to render to view clips (but if you add efx etc you will have to render)). Avid (as did all other NLEs including Edius) required conversion to their proprietary codecs at capture a few years back to be able to mix format (DVCPROHD at 60P with HDCAM 24P etc) . Nowadays with adequate CPU power, format mixing on any timeline is done realtime.
thanks Drew but I'm still on 5.1.4....
