It's adorable, that's what it is! ![]()
The shrimp family Palaemonidae, subfamily Pontoniinae has many species which are specialized commensals on sessile invertebrates like sponges, gorgonians, and tunicates. A recent paper by Charles Franzen lists species from 6 genera taken from tunicates collected for science. Most of them were described from preserved specimens so no color information is available for amateur namers like us. Unless one of the shrimp experts that lurk here recognizes it we'll have to leave it as "commensal shrimp".
One of the premier lurkers, Sammy DeGrave from Oxford University Museum, did drop by. He calls it Odontonia katoi. I call it beautiful!
thanks, Sammy ![]()
