Nikon Coolpix 5000

  1. I want to buy a nikon coolpix 5000 with the Ikelite housing. i´m allready using a olympus C3040Z with the PT010 housing. my flash is a ikelite DS50 with the ikleite ttl sensor on it.

as i saw is in the new housing for the coolpix a bulkhead included, that means for that i can use a sync. cable for a real and errorfree TTL picture.

    1) or not?

    2) a friend of mine want to built in a bulkhead in the pt010 housing and also want to use the external flash connector for a sync cable. he also want to use a olympus flash in a extra housing for use the ttl function. is it possible that this system works good?

    3) ad 2. is it possible to use this system also with the ds50 and a sync cable? or does the electronic not fit with the external flash option from the camera?

    4) can i use in the new coolpix system my old ds50 flash without a sensor only with the cable in TTL mode, and how it works when i want a ds125 flash and the ds50 as slave?

hope i get any answers, for your a help a :D

  2. Hades, I can answer a couple of your questions

    1. TTL is never "real and errorfree" underwater........sync cord or sensor.........macro probably yields the best TTL results because the entire scene is lit by the strobe without much ambient light

    2. don't know

    3. don't know

    4. the DS 50 should work fine with just the sync cord.......the DS 125 works the same..........a double cord will allow both strobes to be used in TTL............

FYI, I would recommend that you think about the Ikelite manual controller and use the Nikon WC-68 19mm lens

i can use a sync. cable for a real and errorfree TTL picture

If you mean 'electronically controlled' (real) and 'firing reliably' (error free) TTL then the answer is yes. Having said that if the remote optical sensor is aimed properly your strobe should fire reliably too. If what you mean by 'error free' is that you'll get correct exposures in TTL everytime because of the sync cord then the answer is no. As kdietz mentions the same rules of TTL apply, regardless of sync cord or remote sensor.

a friend of mine wants to built in a bulkhead in the pt010 housing and also wants to use the external flash connector for a sync cable

Wow, your friend is a brave person. Having said that this has already been done here.

He also wants to use an olympus flash in a extra housing to use the ttl function. Is it possible that this system works good?

I've suggested this once to Olympus but got a negative response. You'll have to take things like colour temp., power and angle of coverage underwater into consideratation. However, if you are successful then let us know - I'm sure there are many of us who would be interested :D .

Is it possible to use this system also with the ds50 and a sync cable? Or do the electronics not fit with the external flash option from the camera?

If you mean using the PT-010 (with the bulkhead modification) with the DS50 then it'll depend on what bulkhead you install. You'll also need to figure out which pins are firing what. However, this system will not work in TTL. Ikelite already has a housing for the Olympus C5050 that does this.

  4. Suggest you do a search of this site for TTL and CP 5000. A number of people have posted recipes for getting good TTL with the 5000. It can be done. The manual controller works better though. As recommended above it is a better solution. It is what I use. I save the TTL sensor for a second strobe. The DS 50 works great with the 5000. Definitely get the 19 mm lens and dome port.
