Mercury scare might save Japanese dolphins...

  1. Good article in the NY Times today.

Maybe the environmentalists should now direct their energy on the BUYERS of live dolphins from Taiji and other Japanese locations that are sold to overseas aquariums.

TAIJI, Japan — For years, Western activists have traveled to this remote port to protest the annual dolphin drive. And for years, local fishermen have ignored them, herding the animals into a small cove and slashing them until the tide flows red.

But now, a new menace may succeed where the activists have failed: mercury.

  2. Note the silence of the traditionalist town council about this. Like the shark's fin mercury levels debacle in Thailand, where Wildaid was taken to court to prove it and no one heard much fanfare anyhow. In fact, the government's official stance is that shark's fin is ok to consume despite all the warnings. Go figure.

Maybe the mercury has affected them already. It sure explains a lot about my washington born and bred ex-gf who had high mercury levels into her mid-20s ;)
