  1. Hopefully he and everyone else is alright.

FORT LAUDERDALE - A shark bit man diving in the ocean Sunday, prompting a hasty mayday call to the U.S. Coast Guard to come hoist him to a hospital Sunday, the federal agency said.

The victim, 50, was diving about 50 miles east of Fort Lauderdale beach when the shark bit him about 10 a.m., Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Nick Ameen said. A crewmember aboard the 70-foot Sheerwater, a commercial diving vessel, put in the mayday call to the Coast Guard.

The agency immediately launched its HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter, Ameen said. The rescue crew hoisted the man off the boat and flew him to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami for treatment, Ameen said.

There were discussions in the past that incidents like this could eventually shut down some forms of shark diving...not sure if this was related to a shark dive or not though

  2. Hi Drew,

Where did you read it was a tiger shark? Obviously there is a big difference in the potential scale of injury depending on the species.

  3. According to other newsclips, no one identified the shark. Of course, they possibly may be trying to play down the injury due to the negative publicity it brings. Spin is everything.

    Hope the guy is ok.

For some reason I thought I saw Tiger Shark in a newsclip but looking back at the link it did not mention it, so I would assume it is still unknown like Drew said.
