CS3 + RAW + JPG

  1. Now that CS3 will let you open a jpg in photoshop RAW I was wondering how would that leave the final image, would the quality drop quite a bit in the final jpg, or does it maintain the quailty of the image, also it seems you can change the white balance in a jpg now, is that right? if so what are the implications to the jpg only shooter, does it open a new world for them?

  2. My understanding is that both lightroom and PS3 camera raw will allow you to adjust JPGs using the same controls as with RAW files, but these adjustments are as destructive to image quality as making such changes in Photoshop would be. It is just you get new controls to adjust JPGs, but without the benefit of relatively harmless RAW adjustments.

  3. Alex as usual is spot on.

If you avoid making extreme adjustments, I find that using ACR RAW on jpg's is pretty helpful (WB, curves, saturation, etc), especially for those of us who are more familair with using the RAW converter vs the usual photoshop adjustments.

I personally like the fact that I can adjust WB on a jpg in ACR (with the traditional WB sliders) quickly, instead of firing up photoshop and doing the usual color corrections there.
