P/S Recommendations

  1. I'm looking to replace my aged Olympus C3000's and Oly plex housing.

I have the Inon UWL100 lens that I dearly love. Haven't shot with my still system for awhile and wanted to move to something more current.

I will be freediving with the rig and want something small/compact for traveling. I've considered the Canon A570 and housing, but not sure how well the camera performs in available light (I will be freediving no deeper than 10-15 meters) and it doesn't shoot in raw format. I also don't have a clue as to its shutter lag.

I want to find a camera/housing setup that gives me the following:

    • Ability to attach my Inon lens to the housing
    • fairly short shutter lag from the camera with no vignetting when using the Inon lens
    • ability to shoot raw format if possible

I will be using this more for online publishing so I won't be needing super high rez capabilities - more for doing online audio slide shows

With the plethora of cameras/housings out there these days, I figured someone here could give some recommendations.

    Thanks

  2. hmm, i don't know which cameras shoot raw anymore, it seems to be goin out the window with compacts. maybe the Canon G9? but i don't know.

I like my Canon A series ones, the A640 gets good reviews, not sure what number they are at now. I can't comment on any others as i only use the Canon compacts and I do like them, good on batt life and fast focus. i don't think they offer Raw though.

But, whichever cam you do get, the shutter lag will kick butt on your old Oly.. :D

  3. it doesn't shoot in raw format

It does if you install the CHDK hack. You may have to try both versions and one will work. There is a new build out (Albest Build 49).

You cannot process the Raw files in Lightroom or Photoshop until you convert them to DNG. There are free Raw conversion utilities for Canon Powershot cameras that convert the .CRW files you get to DNG, and there you go.

I have not tried the A570IS underwater yet, but it's not bad in low light. My only issue so far is that it tends to overexpose with the built in flash in Macro Mode, and I do not find the button/menu system very user friendly. (and I shoot Nikon, so that's saying something). I do hear you need the fisheye or widest of wide angle accessory lenses to avoid vignetting.

    Cheers,

  4. I've owned and used both a C3000 & C4000 in a pt-010.

I also have a Fuji F30 in the Fuji housing.

I purchased the canon A570, but ended up returning it. It does have a great list of features for the price, but the focus in available light was just too slow for me.

I wasn't so worried about shot to shot time because my strobe has a long recycle, but the shutter lag felt very much like the C3000/C4000

Read this entire thread for my impressions.

Of course, I never actually used it underwater, so take it with a grain of salt.

  5. the fuji e900 shoots in raw, and is known for lower noise in its higher-iso's, which will help in available light shooting, and you can use it with your inon lens..
