Spare O-rings

5 posts
  1. I had my Ikelite housing for my D70 for about 2 years. When I bought the housing, I bought a spare O-ring with it. In all the dives over the 2 years I never needed the spare, but it was nice to know I had it.

I now have an Ikelite housing for my D300 and I bought a spare O-ring with it. It has been on one dive. While I was getting it ready for a dive today, as I greased the O-ring I noticed a couple of very small nicks. I have no idea how they got there and I have no idea if they would cause a problem, but as I have a spare O-ring I don't have to take any chances. My only problem is I have to buy another spare (or 2).

So... if you don't have a spare, let this be a reminder...

  2. & get a complete set, not just the main o-ring.

Where do you all buy your o-rings from? I'm having trouble finding an online source that has housing, port, battery o-rings for my ikelite.

  4. A quick question....Do you guys take the main Oring out when travelling or during storage? What about the ports?

I find myself removing all Orings and keeping them in ziplocs. However, I wonder if its such a good idea to close the housing without an Oring in it....I wonder if there is a possibility that I may end up "scratching the groove the oring sits in.....also, when I got all my gear, it came with the Oring installed. Why is it then that manufacturers recommend taking it out if not in use for storage?

B&H. They have all the O rings for my Ikelite gear.

I do. All my O rings go in ziplock bags (as you suggest) with the type of O ring written on the outside. The rear panel of the housing gets reattached to the housing and locked shut. It is acrylic on acrylic and I very much doubt there would be any damage. The ports are left off with their neoprene covers on and stored in the Pelican case.

I guess if you were really worried about acrylic on acrylic, you could buy a spare O ring that is only used for storage and transport.
