New Subal viewfinder

  1. For those subal owners interested!

I saw it in the Italian Dive Show, last weekend. It seems like Inon 45º but improved in its size and shape.

I also saw and "touched" the Subal D3 and D300 housings. Really impresive housings, ergonomics are really good. Price, as always, a little bit higher than I'd like!! :)

  2. Hi Jordi,

A friend of mine has an Inon 45 degree finder on his Subal. So I know that they fit.

I know that the Eudi show used to be in Genova? When did it move to Roma?

Did you take any snaps of the Subal D3 and D300 housings? The official pictures are nice, but a bit sanitised.

  3. Hi Alex,

Yes, this year the show is been in Rome.

I attach the only photo I have of the D3 housing. For size and weight D300 housing is very interesting.

I also attach 2 more snaps of the d300. Not amaizing but...

I think Subal D300 is the only housing to give access to flash mode and flash exposure compensation button.

This button should allow photographer to choose between rear curtain and normal synchro. Am I right?

As I am not Nikon user, can this function be dialed through menu or only through this button? If this is the case I do not understand why some housing did not have this control.

    Best

Yes the flash mode button allows control of rear curtain sync and exposure compensation controls with the command and subcommand dials. This is nice and probably very helpful when using TTL. I generally set my camera to Rear Curtain, but the ability to change is nice. This is much quicker than doing it through menus.

As expected that D3 housing is a tank.

I'd love to try that 45 degree viewfinder.

  5. Thanks Jordi.

Just a fill out your comment on the flash mode button on Nikons. The problem positioning (for housings) of the button started with the D200 and continued with the D80 and D300, where the button in on the left of the pentaprism (looking from the back). This is a really awkward button to reach when designing housings.

The D3 does not have the issue as the flash mode button is on the top of the camera, like on many older Nikons.

It looks to me like the Subal D300 housing has the traditional narrow bore port of the current subal's rather than the wide bore ports of the D3? I must admit I thought the D300 was going to take the new Subal ports. Not that I have seen any of these housings in the flesh - so I am just speculating.

    Alex,

Even if it is an awkward button to reach, if there is a manufacturer who does it other designers should be able to do too.

Mr Stepanek, from Subal, told me that for the D3 housing they have designed a new port system in order to fit the new nikon wide lenses like 14-24. So, if I understood correctly the user will be able to choose between both ports, the wide and narrow bore, when you order the housing. I guess that with an adaptor will be possible to use both port systems. What I forgot to ask was if this will be also available for the D300.

  7. I think Subal D300 is the only housing to give access to flash mode and flash exposure compensation button.

Certainly don’t want to Hijack this thread :) , but just want to let you know that the Aquatica D200 has been accessing this Flash exposure mode and exposure compensation control since it hit the market in 2006 and the D300 is designed to do the same.

    Regards.

  8. Is that D3 housing as monstrously large as it looks?

Is the D3 bigger than the D2x Alex?

    [edit]

After thinking about it why would you use use front curtain sync for anything ?

  9. Please allow me to go back to the viewfinder. It's on the Subal website now, apparently the same magnification factor as the GS180 (straight) viewfinder. Does anyone know if it will fit on the D80 housing?
